Job overview
We are pleased to offer a 12 secondment opportunity as a Practice Education Facilitator. This is an exciting opportunity to work within the Workforce and Education team, providing expert advice, knowledge, and guidance, supporting clinicians and nursing students with the provision of high quality clinical placements.
The Practice Education Facilitator will be a visible role model and work collaboratively with the nursing teams and academic institutions to effectively influence and support colleagues and learners in many nursing roles e.g. Student Nursing Associate Apprentices, (SNA's), Pre-Registration Student nursing and future Nursing Associates/Registered Nurses.
Main duties of the job
The Practice Education Facilitator (PEF) will work collaboratively with the operational/ward teams, practice supervisors and assessors, learners and academic institution colleagues to enable effective practice learning. This will be in a learning environment which encourages and nurtures learners to succeed in their academic programmes and choose Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as their employer of choice. As the educational landscape changes for NHS professions, this role will look specifically at further implementing the CLiP coaching model within the clinical areas as well as increasing the number of nursing student placements available in GHFT, whilst ensuring a high-quality positive student experience.
The PEF will work collaboratively with the operational/ward teams, learners and academic institutions to effectively influence the delivery of effective high quality, safe patient centred learning placements for those undertaking student nursing programmes. This includes, but is not limited to, Apprentice Health Care Support Workers, Health Care Support Workers, Student Nursing Associates (SNA’s), Pre-registration Nurses (Student Nurses), and future Nursing Associates/Registered Nurses.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Provide professional support and facilitation to unit managers/team leaders to plan and evaluate their educational learning environment so that the CLiP coaching model can be effectively used. This will enable staff to identify learning opportunities within their areas & develop adequate numbers of practice supervisors and assessors who will support students on educational programs to fulfil professional standard proficiencies
Co-ordinate nursing and paramedic clinical placements across GHNHSFT.
Provide specialist educational knowledge to safeguard learning and teaching in clinical practice & ensure it complies with the standards of proficiency for registered nurses, Nursing Associates and Midwives and the quality assurance framework for Nursing, Midwifery and Nursing Associates education (NMC, 2019)
Provide support and guidance development of the clinical learning environment with ward managers, Education/Professional Education Practitioners, Practice Development colleagues, Higher Educational Institute/Health and Social Care Partner colleagues
Facilitate the delivery of the Practice Supervisor and Assessor Training and Practice Assessor Updates within the Trust
Support and embed the principles of the Safe Learning Environment Charter, across Nursing placement areas
Maintain accurate records of Nursing students on placement, to support and facilitate the Team Leader for Nursing Education in the confirmation of placement hours for placement tariff
Widen participation by providing fair access to Learning and Development opportunities, recruiting new and existing staff (where appropriate) to programmes including apprenticeships, (including but not exclusively health care support workers, Student Nursing Associate), clinical education, e-learning and functional skills
Increase awareness of GHT career pathways and engage staff, raising aspirations and achievements
1. Professional Development, Education and Training
Be competent in the use of all relevant Trust IT systems including the use of electronic patient records, email, social media and Microsoft.
Maintain regular use of emails to keep abreast of information disseminated in the Trust
Always adhere to the NMC code of practice and operate within the NMC scope of professional practice.
Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of Accountability, responsibility and Duty of Care and work towards the provision of support and education for less experienced and non-registered staff on implications for practice.
Ensure clinical and educational practice is evidence based or peer reviewed “best practice”
Keep self-up to date with changes to Nurse Education and how to support and assess students in practice.
Promote quality placement environments including supporting teaching and education of learners whilst on placement.
Engage in nursing student forum to provide educational opportunities for learners on placements
Demonstrate a commitment to research-based practice and clinical educational excellence in all service provision
Support research-based changes to improve patient centred care
Remain up-to-date and a strong positive role model in all mandatory training and appraisal reviews as required for self and the team
Provide opportunities for learners to engage in educational opportunities and networking
2. Management and Leadership
Ensure learners know how to raise and escalate concerns and gather feedback to make improvements.
Comply with Trust and Departmental policies and procedures e.g. Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), Manual Handling, clinical equipment competency, risk management, Data Protection Acts and patient confidentiality at all times. This will include demonstrating compliance with the terms of all safeguarding policies and processes relevant to the safeguarding of adults and children in the care of GHNHSFT and undergoing regular mandatory training concerned with safeguarding matters.
Report near misses and untoward incidents, complaints, clinical emergencies, injury or medicine administration errors as detailed in the departmental and Trust protocols. Assist lead staff in investigating incidents as required.
Ensure a smart, professional image that enhances the public perception of the Trust, and the professionalism of its staff is portrayed.
3. Planning and Organisation
Deliver, evaluate and ensure accurate records of training for the Practice Supervisor and Assessor Training (Nursing) and Practice Assessor Updates
Provide professional support and facilitation to unit managers/team leaders to plan and evaluate their educational learning environment so that the CLiP coaching model can be effectively used
Co-ordinate Nursing clinical placements including BSc students and paramedics across GHNHSFT, liaising with HEIs
Provide pastoral support to BSc students, Student Nursing Associates and Registered Nurse Degree Apprentices while on programme supporting retention of our future Nursing Associates and Registered Nurses
Support and embed principles of the safe learning environment charter, including induction, networking and placement evaluations
Supporting Practice Supervisors, Practice Assessors and Nursing Students to implement and review reasonable adjustments
Supporting Practice Supervisors, Practice Assessors to understand HEI practice documentation and how to support the failing student
4. Research and Development
Review learner feedback and support the Team Leader for Nursing Education to implement placement action plans
Comply with requirements to register with the NMC and identify own learning needs and ensure your own professional development is maintained by keeping up to date with practice developments.
Regularly review education and training delivered to ensure it remains relevant, innovative and underpinned with research in support of our Trust’s aspirations to achieve an Outstanding CQC rating and excellence in education as a University Hospital.
Introduce innovative ways of working to the service that incorporate digital technologies; this with a view to streamlining, simplifying, achieving cost-efficiencies or making the learning process more enjoyable and effective.
Write, maintain and ensure implementation of relevant policies/protocols/ guidelines relevant to the education, learning and development.
Identify own development needs, aligning these to service requirements and personal aspirations. Proactively develop and improve own practice using all available resources
Openly question and challenge practice in a constructive way so that standards of patient care are continually evaluated and improved.
5. Communications and Working Relationships
Ensure quality placement experiences to support positive patient experience

Person specification
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse with an active NMC pin
- Evidence of a recognised practice assessor/ supervisor qualification (PG Cert, ENB 998/ Teaching & Assessing in Practice / FLAP / FLIP, PA/PS Training) with evidence of contribution to the development of clinical practice, education and training based on knowledge acquired.
- Experience of working in an acute clinical environment supervising, assessing, coaching, supporting and teaching others
- Knowledge of the standards for pre-registration nursing programmes
- Demonstrates ability to question and challenge clinical and education practice in a constructive way so that standards are continually evaluated and improved.
- Previous experience in healthcare education
Desirable criteria
- Post Graduate Qualification in a relevant field
