Leg Ulcer Specialist Nurse, Band 6 (22.5 hours a week)
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Gloucestershire Leg Ulcer Service for a Band Six specialist nurse. We are seeking an enthusiastic Registered Nurse with a desire to join our established leg ulcer service to provide enhanced, evidenced based best practice in the field of leg ulcer nursing provision. You should have substantial post registration experience with knowledge and competencies in wound care, leg ulcer management and venous disease.
The post holder will be based at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital within the current Leg Ulcer Team, however, as part of the role there is a requirement to travel to Cheltenham General and community hospitals. The Leg Ulcer Service support the Vascular Network in operating reviews, assessments and treatment of both in and out-patients across Gloucestershire.
Main duties of the job
Whilst supported by the long established and highly experienced leg ulcer team the successful candidate will be expected to assist with the prompt review of both in and out-patient referrals, to assess, diagnose , formulate and evaluate the treatment plans of this client group. Partake in research and educational developments, and work within the vascular network with support of the Vascular consultants.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required
- First Level Registered Nurse with Nursing and Midwifery Council
- Substantial post registration experience with an interest in leg ulcers
- Educated to degree level
- Excellent communication/interpersonal skills
- Excellent independent and teamworking ability
- Enhanced IT and analytical skills to enable audit and database upkeep
Main Tasks
- Demonstrate understanding of all relevant anatomy and physiology, disease processes, principles of wound healing and wound management, quality of life issues associated with leg ulceration and all relevant treatment interventions
- Undertake assessment and treatment of patients with chronic leg ulceration in accordance with agreed protocols.
- Competence in performing the measurement of ankle brachial pressure indices and interpretation of investigations where appropriate eg: venous/arterial duplex scans
- Responsible for the delivery of detailed, accurate and contemporaneous patient records
- Communicate with service users, carers and health professionals in order to disseminate complex nursing and clinical information and treatment plans.
- To deliver specialised safe care within a challenging and changing clinical environment using innovative solutions, appropriate equipment and resources
- Ensure and facilitate services are delivered locally wherever possible
- Actively participate in Clinical Governance activities and work to maintain a high-quality service
- Ensure nursing care is delivered in an expert and professional manner compatible with current research-based protocols and be responsible for maintaining accurate, effective and comprehensive written nursing records by regularly evaluating nursing documentation in accordance with the NMC guidelines
- To ensure the safe custody and administration of all drugs, medicines and appliances
- Provide clinical advice and support to patients, their relatives/carers and other health care professionals in accordance with agreed local policies
