Job overview

The Specialist Palliative Care Team provide complex symptom control interventions as well as managing complex needs to patients across the Trust. We also provide education and support to fulfil the Trust's end of life improvement plan. We are looking for a registered nurses with experience in palliative care to join our team

You would be expected to work as a clinical nurse specialist and with support of the team, assess and manage patients with complex palliative care needs.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated person who has insight into the role. Knowledge and skills around symptom management as well as managing complex psychosocial issues and an ability to manage sensitive and honest conversations. Working with a supportive team, we work 9-5, Monday - Friday with rotation onto the oncall service rota.

The specialist palliative care has been evaluated positively as a cohesive team within our most recent staff survey results. Alongside duties, you will be given access to monthly education sessions for revalidation. 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To work effectively as an autonomous practitioner within the countywide multidisciplinary palliative care team promoting and maintaining quality of life for patients with cancer or other life threatening illnesses requiring specialist palliative care and into bereavement  for relatives and carers

To provide specialist clinical leadership in the assessment of complex symptom and psychological problems, provide support, advice and leadership to health care professionals in line with national and local guidelines ensuring a cohesive, holistic and evidence based approach to the management of palliative patients.

To empower and equip health care professionals with skills and knowledge to deal with a variety of less complex problems through education and being an available resource

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse
Desirable criteria
  • Degree qualification
  • Relevant palliative care training
  • Evidence of advanced communication skills training or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post Registration experience in a variety of settings
  • Significant experience at Band 5 in specialist palliative care or caring for palliative care patients in a community or hospital setting.
  • Experience and knowledge of symptom management.
  • Experience of communicating regarding complex, sensitive issues with patients, carers and professionals
  • Experience of managing and prioritising a variety of responsibilities
Desirable criteria
  • Experience within an oncological or palliative care setting
  • Evidence of offering symptom management advice as part of role

Knowledge / Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to develop effective interpersonal relationships with a diverse range of professionals and lay people
  • Excellent planning and organisation skills
  • Able to work independently and deliver objectives within a given timeframe
  • Able to access information from different sources and use critical appraisal skills
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate clear and advanced communication skills, written, verbal and non verbal
