Main duties of the job

You must hold your UK NMC registration to apply for this role.

We have Level 2 Baby Friendly accreditation, CQC rating of ‘good’ and provide professional development opportunities for all levels of staff and work with the recommendations from the Better Births report.

Our unit provides three options for place of birth: the established co-located Alexandra Birth Centre, home birth and the Delivery Suite. This ensures that all women have access to the optimal birth environment in accordance with their choice and in line with evidence-based practice. Midwives are consequently supported and enabled to practice in the optimal environments for all elements of midwifery care for all women (and their families) to enjoy a normal birth experience.

Our rotational posts offer excellent all-round experience in a progressive environment, with the potential for individuals to develop a full range of midwifery skills.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Maintain NMC registration and ensure that Revalidation is up to date. Practice in accordance with the NMC The Code and the Standards for Midwives
  • Ensure that other NMC documents and Trust guidelines are adhered to. Maintain and develop professional knowledge and competence in accordance with NMC recommendations
  • Plan and provide individualised care based on careful history taking, medical and social assessment as early in pregnancy as possible
  • To promote and maintain standards of professional practice in order to enhance quality of care for clients
  • Work within the agreed guidelines, policies and practices and participate in the review of guidelines and practice
  • Be accountable for maintaining a safe and responsible approach to own sphere of practice.
  • Ensure good communication with appropriate team professionals/agencies/clients using discretion and maintaining confidentiality and a level of continuity and quality of care
  • To maintain legible and contemporaneous records at all times, reflecting the management of care
  • Communicate information effectively with clients to assist them in making informed choice regarding maternity care
  • Be aware of the Data Protection Act and confidentiality rules. Work towards the aims/objectives of the Trust’s Nursing and Midwifery strategy. Participate in research trials within the unit
  • Ensure that midwifery practice is current, and research based
  • Plan, organise and participate in Parent Education teaching in the clinical area
  • Advise of Family Planning, Sexual Health and Public Health Services available
