Job overview

An exciting opportunity for a part time Band 7 Practice Development Nurse has arisen at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospital Trust to join the Neonatal Education Team. 

The successful candidate will work in collaboration with other Practice Development Nurse, Management and Governance Teams to support the development of neonatal nursing practice.

The post holder will play an essential role with responsibility for the education, training and practice development of nursing staff and other learners in the department.

They will provide and participate in MDT education and training using a range of techniques and modalities including simulation and skills drills to meet the learning needs of the team and individual staff.

They will also represent the Trust at local and external educational events. 

Main duties of the job

Promote an effective learning environment within the workplace.

Provision of training and education to learners placed in the department including medical, physician associate, nursing associate and nursing students using a range of techniques and modalities including simulation and skills drills.

Provide and participate in MDT education and training including collaboration with specialist and advanced practice nursing, medical and resuscitation teams to meet the learning needs of the team and individual staff.

Review existing induction and preceptorship programmes and adapt these to fit the needs of the service and the individual.

Maintain detailed and accurate records regarding staff education.

Secure links with local universities to ensure that preceptorship programmes meet the needs of newly qualified staff.

Maintain personal clinical competence and professional development by keeping informed with current research advances in Neonatal Care and having regular appraisals to develop and assess personal progress.

Examine training needs and implement appropriate training packages for non-registered and registered nurses.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Participate in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of specialist evidence based care to infants, children, young people and their families.

Work with non-registered and registered nurses as a resource providing advice, support and guidance.

To act as a role model and promote evidence based practice whenever possible.

Maintain a high level of specialist clinical skills and practice.

Person specification

Education

Essential criteria
  • Registered nurse with current registration
  • Hold appropriate level for the area of speciality (RSCN/RN Child)
  • Registered mentor with proven experience of teaching in the clinical setting
Desirable criteria
  • Degree or working at that level

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Proven clinical knowledge and skills in relevant area
  • Organisational and leadership skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge on Badgernet system

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience at a senior nursing level.
  • Experience of educating and supporting staff in the clinical/ classroom setting.
