Preterm Lead Midwife

Job overview

This is an exciting new role to be introduced Trustwide as a fixed term 2 year position. The role will be providing oversight for all aspects of prediction, prevention and preparation of preterm birth.

The most challenging part of this job will be embedding it into the business as usual aspect of the service provision, with buy in from all clinicians and midwifery staff who will access this service as an additional resource. You will need resilience, tenacity, excellent communication and determination to allow this role to succeed. 

Main duties of the job

The role will support embedding Element 5 of the Saving Babies' Lives Care Bundle Version 2.

The Preterm Lead Midwife will be a part of the Fetal Wellbeing team and will lead the Preterm Birth Surveillance Clinics across the Trust. They will be mentored by Consultant obstetricians and Fetal Wellbeing Midwife with advanced skills in prediction, prevention and preparation of preterm birth. They will work in partnership with all areas of Maternity staff and other agencies to ensure optimal practice in relation to this element.

There will be a strong emphasis on quality improvement to ensure high standards and quality of care are given to all pregnant people with significant risks of preterm birth accessing antenatal services at EKHUFT. This position will offer opportunities to work within the Perinatal Optimisation task group and research teams to improve all pathways relating to Preterm Birth.

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife with at least 2 years experience at band 6
  • Demonstration of previous experiences in relation to the knowledge and skills framework expected for Band 6.
  • Evidence of further study ENB 997/Preparation for mentorship course or equivalent.
  • Be prepared to undertake further academic study.
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised additional CPD

Clinical skills and experience

Essential criteria
  • The ability to converse at ease with customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for the post
  • Ability to work towards and demonstrate completion of: -Induction pack -Preceptorship pack -Practice portfolio -Work independently and supervise Junior staff. -Working towards Band 7 skills framework
  • Competencies and clinical skills related to the knowledge and skills framework for Band 6
  • Communication and inter personal skills (verbal and written)
  • Organisational prioritising skills

  • IT Skills

  • Demonstrate leadership and managerial skills (LEO course or equivalent)
