Exciting Development Opportunity: Band 5 Occupational Health Specialist Nurse Training Post
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a registered nurse who is interested in developing a career in Occupational Health.
We are seeking motivated Band 5 nurses who would like to undertake a structured training opportunity to develop as an Occupational Health Specialist Nurse.
This is a fixed-term, part-time training post for two years, with formal training delivered over approximately 18 months.
Occupational Health is a rewarding and varied nursing speciality focused on supporting staff health, wellbeing, safety and workability. The role offers the opportunity to develop skills in areas such as health assessment, workplace health advice, immunisation, health surveillance, sickness absence support, fitness for work, and prevention of work-related ill health.
This post would suit a nurse who is keen to broaden their clinical experience, develop specialist knowledge, and explore a career pathway in Occupational Health. Full support, supervision and training will be provided throughout the programme.
On successful completion, the post holder will have gained valuable specialist experience and a strong foundation for future progression within Occupational Health nursing.

· Manage exposure incidents and advice staff and managers accordingly

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Tasks Once Competencies are Signed Off
Deliver immunisations in line with Health protection guidelines
· Get involved in the flu campaign
· Undertake fitness to work assessments
· Manage exposure incidents and advice staff and managers accordingly
· Undertake relevant health assessments in line with competencies
Client / Patient Safety and Quality Improvement
Contribute to monitoring agreed quality improvement metrics to support compliance with local and external practice standards e.g. NHS Plus, cold chain monitoring etc
· Support the Senior OH Nurse Advisor / Head of Occupational Healthin ensuring that workload is prioritised and managed effectively.
· Participate in audit and quality improvement programmes appropriate to the advancement of the service as required.
· Support designated areas for service improvement under supervision
· With senior staff, identify and minimise clinical and non-clinical risk issues reporting to the senior team.
· To always act in a professional manner in accordance with the NMC guidelines. Safe, efficient and effective administration of medicines in accordance with the NMC guidelines.
· Ensure that accurate and legible client records are kept in line with professional and legal requirements, paper and electronic.
· Promote and maintain effective working relationships and communications with Consultants, medical staff, nurse colleagues and other multi-agency professionals.
Infection Prevention and Control
· Ensure staff standard of dress and appearance promotes patient and public confidence in Infection Prevention and Control practice for department.
· To support the Senior OH Nurse Advisor / Head of Occupational Health to achieve a department culture of cleanliness and compliance with best practice in Infection Prevention and Control, promoting zero tolerance to avoidable infection.
· Ensure all clinical areas have consistent access to hand rub.
· Ensure that relevant audits are completed by each clinical area in line with the Trust’s Annual Programme for Infection Prevention and Control.
Patient experience
· Act as the client’s advocate and ensure the advocacy role is understood by all staff.
· Ensure that complaints are resolved by local resolution where possible.
· Participate in gaining and responding to client feedback

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse (Adult/ Mental Health
- NMC willingness to undertake OH training
Desirable criteria
- Vaccination or immunisation competency, Venepuncture competency
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience in a clinical nursing role
- Experience IM administration of medicines
- Accurate clinical record keeping
Desirable criteria
- Experience in vaccination programmes, health surveillance, pre-employment screening Experience with electronic OH systems (Cohort/OPAS/Cority)
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Understanding of NMC Code
- Confidentiality & GDPR Basic risk assessment & health promotion
Desirable criteria
- Idea of health surveillance (audiometry, spirometry, skin checks) Vaccination & immunity screening Fitness to work assessments Equality Act 2010
Skills
