Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Undertake training needs analysis in conjunction with departmental heads

Review, revise and provide in-house multi-disciplinary programmes of education to include:

· Basic Life Support (adult, Maternal, paediatric and neonatal)

· Intermediate Life Support

· Defibrillation (automated & manual)

· ECG Training

Ensure an adequate number of accredited Life Support programmes are run within the Trust Specific courses include:  

· Adult Advanced Life Support (ALS) European

· Paediatric Life Support (EPLS)

· Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS)

· Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NLS)

· Advanced Trauma Life support (ATLS)

· Advanced trauma Nursing Course (ATNC)

To use simulation training. This will involve working with multidisciplinary groups to deliver both low fidelity and high fidelity simulation training as specified by the Director of Simulation to meet the training needs of staff both within the Trust and if required those outside the Trust. This is contingent on the appropriate equipment, facilities and support for Simulation Training within the Trust being in place

Liaise with the Medical School to ensure medical student training commitments are fulfilled

Maintain a database of all training provided and provide reports on educational and simulation activity for the organisation and external bodies

In conjunction with the Postgraduate Medical Tutors, evaluate the professional standards and practice of foundation level doctors and all doctors in training

Management

In conjunction with hospital policies and procedures, manage the resuscitation service, including resuscitation officers and clerical support

Specific duties to include:

· Performance management of team members

· Achievement Review and personal development planning

· Participate in, and where necessary lead, the recruitment, selection and training of members of the team

· Manage and ensure adequate clinical rota cover for the service

Work in partnership with managers to review the performance of staff and participate, when necessary, in the trusts disciplinary process

Manage and be accountable for resuscitation service budget in line with NHS financial standing regulations

Manage and supply emergency equipment throughout the organisation providing a cost effective approach to the provision of emergency equipment 

Manage and Bid for Educational monies to provide all the advanced life support courses liaising with the Lead for Education and Practice development teams as well as leads for medical education

Deputise as chair for Resuscitation Committee as needed and lead Resuscitation committee

Represent the Resuscitation committee at the Trust directorate boards, and Trust Patient Safety Committee

Have a flexible approach to working patterns and be willing to work outside normal hours as required. This will be dependent upon contingencies of the service and Trust needs

Clinical Practice / Quality

To attend emergency calls where appropriate to observe, participate and lead when necessary resuscitation attempts and maintain own skills and clinical credibility

Act as a role model for excellence and expertise in Medical Emergency Management. (This activity must be conducted within the post-holders scope of professional practice and according to local, Trust policy / procedure)

Work with local clinical leads to ensure resuscitation equipment is placed and appropriately stocked to best meet the needs of the patients of the Trust, in a cost effective manner

Support the work of the Acute Response Team in prevention of cardio-respiratory arrest and deteriorating patients and specific tracheostomy groups

Report all Cardiac Arrest / Peri-Arrest activity (within an agreed audit framework) maintaining trust resuscitation dashboard and quality indicators reports and report nationally to NCAA

Undertake original research in the field of Medical Emergencies and Resuscitation

Produce an annual report outlining all relevant educational and practice activities and achievements and monthly reports to integrated service units on compliance and patient outcomes

Link with the Director of Governance and Support staff to ensure all Cardiac Arrest/Peri Arrest activity is appropriately linked to the wider Governance agenda

Link with pharmacy to evaluate and select appropriate drugs and delivery systems to meet the needs of the patients of the trust in a cost effective manner
