Main duties of the job
- The Associate Director of Nursing (ADoN) will provide senior leadership whilst working cohesively within the Triumvirate of the Urgent & Emergency Care Department.
- They are responsible for the development and application of systems, control processes and risk management arrangements that ensure full compliance with internal and external governance procedures and to benchmark against best practice requirements.
- They will work with the division to develop the strategic direction and vision which maximises business efficiency, effectiveness, flexibility and staff morale.
- Support the development of a culture within the ED, which is open and transparent that supports and empowers innovation, creativity and learning both at all levels.
- They will be accountable for the direct delivery of safe, effective clinical care and will advise the Divisional Management Team on professional nursing and other clinical staff groups (AHPs) issues. The postholder will be the Divisional lead and link for both the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and the Director of Nursing on all nursing related matters.
- They will work with senior managers across the organisation to ensure effective patient flow including the effective use of beds whilst maintaining quality of care. The post holder will participate in the tactical on call rota.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- NMC/HCPC Registration
- Degree in Nursing/Health related subject
- Masters level qualification or equivalent demonstrable experience
- Teaching/mentorship Qualification
- Management Qualification or evidence of training in management processes and other HR issues
- Evidence of Continuous Professional Development relevant to this role
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of specialist knowledge in a particular relevant area
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Clinical competence, including administering drugs
- Knowledge and understanding of key government legislation, national guidance and drivers relating to the Care Group
- Knowledge of a wide range of staff management practices including: Disciplinary process, Recruitment, performance, redeployment and absence management
- Knowledge of wide range of senior management practices including budgetary management, the consultation process, workforce planning cost pressures and service developments
- Comprehensive understanding of clinical risk and quality governance principles and their application
- An understanding of the NHS System from a national and local level
Experience
Essential criteria
- Clinical competence, including administering drugs
- Evidence of significant management experience, communicating at all levels of the organisation
- Budgetary management experience and understanding of the current NHS financial regime
- Experience of staff management including managing recruitment, performance monitoring, and appraisal, induction and mentoring.
- Supporting senior clinicians in service delivery
- Experience of system leadership
- Experience of chairing meetings including in a multi- agency setting
- Experience of negotiating and influencing at operational and strategic levels
Desirable criteria
- Significant experience at a Band 8 level in an acute care setting
- Involvement in strategic planning
- Experience of bidding for developing managing and mainstreaming short term funding streams

- High-level interpersonal skills.

Communication & Relationships
Essential criteria
- To communicate sensitive information to patients and/or relatives and carers concerning the physical and/or psychological condition of the patient
- Ability to effectively communicate in complex situations and convey complex information with internal and external partners
- Ensure the development of nursing practice systems for effective communication with all clients, carers, visitors, staff, and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
Desirable criteria
- Ensure representation and undertake presentations, as and when needed, at meetings and forums and developing ward/community interface
