We’re looking for a committed and enthusiastic NMC-registered nurse with a strong child-focused approach to join our friendly, forward-thinking School Health team.

Are you someone who thrives on building relationships, using your clinical skills in a meaningful way, and making a real difference to children and young people?  If so, this could be the role for you.

You’ll join a supportive and experienced team of Registered School Nurses, working alongside School Staff Nurses, Learning Disability Nurses and Clinical Support Workers to deliver high-quality, child-centred care across Medway.  Together, we are committed to improving health outcomes and reducing inequalities for children, young people and their families.

This role also offers an excellent development opportunity and may be the perfect stepping stone towards undertaking the SCPHN (School Nurse) qualification.

This is a varied and rewarding community role where you will play a key part in supporting the health and wellbeing of children and young people.

You will work as part of the School Health team to deliver the Healthy Child Programme, providing care and support to school-aged children, young people and their families across a range of settings.

This role involves working within the community across a variety of settings, including schools, family homes, and clinic environments.

In this role, you will:

  • Undertake health assessments and developmental reviews in partnership with the School Nurse
  • Manage a defined caseload, ensuring accurate, timely and high-quality record keeping
  • Promote positive health outcomes by delivering public health messages tailored to local needs
  • Plan and deliver health awareness sessions for school staff, parents, children and young people
  • Safeguard children and young people by following local policies and procedures
  • Act as an Infection Prevention and Control link/resource within the team

The small print

·         Informal visits can be arranged on request.

·         We will offer you the choice of two pension schemes; the NHS Pension scheme and the scottish widows group pension scheme.

·     

·        MCH is considering merging with Kent Community Health Foundation Trust (KCHFT). If the merger goes ahead, the proposed transfer date is 30th September 2026 and this role will be subject to TUPE transfer to KCHFT.

At this time, MCH cannot fund or support any further nurses who require the OSCE training. Please do not apply if you require this training.

Communication and relationship skills 

  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with children, young people and their families as well as partner agencies including health, education and social care
  • Deliver presentations to small groups of children, parents and other professionals
  • Empower children and young people to actively participate in all areas of service delivery and ensure they are listened to
  • Ensure all information about patients is treated confidentially and comply with policies on data protection, information sharing and governance
  • Participate in team and other meetings as required     

 Knowledge, training and experience

  • First level registered nurse – RN, RGN, RMN, RCN
  • Knowledge of child development
  • Knowledge of the healthy child programme
  • Mentorship qualification   

 Analytical and judgement skills

  • Plan  and implement packages of care in collaboration with school nurse based on assessment and needs of the child
  • Work with the team to assess, implement and plan services
  • Evaluate individual and community health care programmes in collaboration with the school nurse     

 Planning and organisational skills

  • Plan and lead the delivery of designated public health and health promotion activities
  • Plan individual and community health care programmes.
  • Manage caseload in association with lead school nurse
  • Ensure statutory and mandatory training is up to date in line with organisational policy     

 Physical Skills

  • IT skills – ability to use microsoft office apps and electronic patient records
  • Ability to travel to diverse sites in a timely manner

 Responsibility for client care

  • To work alongside school nurses in planning, implementing and evaluating individual and community health care programmes
  • To lead the delivery of designated public health and health promotion activities
  • To assess, implement and plan services with individual families, as appropriate to skills and experience
  • To act as an infection control link/ resource to the team
  • Safeguard the client group by adhering to child and adult protection guidelines and procedures
  • Ensure effective communication with clients and colleagues
  • To ensure the provision of a high-quality service that is led by client need and is evidence based
  • Access clinical supervision as per organisational policy
