Job overview

Are you an experienced nurse with a strong work ethic and an interest in  palliative care? If so, we would be interested to hear from you.

We are looking for a Band 6 Junior Sister to complete our friendly and dynamic multi-disciplinary team within the Wisdom Hospice Inpatient Unit. We care for fifteen patients with life-limiting illness, using evidence-based practise to ensure that our patients are cared for with dignity and compassion. 

Main duties of the job

The role involves being the identified lead on each shift, managing a team of nursing and ancillary staff under the guidance and support of an experienced ward manager. You will need to have significant experience in caring for patients with life-limiting illness and an awareness of the impact of this on the patient and their families and carers.

The post will involve three long shifts per week, including night and weekend working.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To work as an autonomous practitioner within the in-patient unit of the Wisdom Hospice with management responsibility for the nursing care of patients admitted to the in-patient unit.

 

To assess, plan, implement and evaluate the nursing care needs of individual patients

 

To line manage staff nurses and Healthcare assistants, including responsibility for practice development and clinical governance. The In-patient unit provides nursing care over a 24 hour period, 365 days/year.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • 1st Level Registered General Nurse
  • Post-registration training in Palliative care/Oncology or significant experience
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Principles of Practice of Palliative Care course (or equivalent ie ENB 931) or willingness to undertake
  • Advanced Communication Skills Training
  • Non- medical prescriber
  • Counselling qualification
  • Leadership qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant experience in Palliative care setting or similar
  • Experience in caring for patients with complex needs.
  • Management skills and experience
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of leading a team through change

  • Experienced in working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Supporting statement demonstrates an understanding of the complexities of the role
  • Supporting statement evidences compassion and empathetic approach to the role
