An opportunity has arisen for a highly skilled competent Cardiac Catheter lab nurse to join the leadership team in the Catheter labs at Royal Blackburn Hospitals NHS Trust. 

This is an exciting development opportunity for an enthusiastic, dedicated, motivated and knowledgeable nurse to expand their skills and expertise.

The successful applicant will daily be asked to make decisions affecting care planning, workload co-ordination and workflow through day case and laboratories.  You will also need to demonstrate effective time management, assertiveness, delegation skills and be an excellent teacher, mentor, and communicator.  We are seeking to recruit a Senior nurse who exhibits the Trusts ambition to deliver Safe, Personal and Effective Care, a team player who demonstrates the key principles of the Trust’s behaviour framework always.

Clinically you will be expected to lead a laboratory team, scrub, and circulate for complicated cardiac procedures, staying calm during emergencies and act as role model to all junior staff, teach and delivering high quality care to our patients. 

You will be expected to deputise for the ward manager in turn, complete all necessary training, e-rostering, sickness absence management, recruitment and selection and attend meetings to maintain a high degree of governance.

You will need to live within 30minutes of Royal Blackburn Hospital to fulfil your on call commitment or be able to make suitable arrangements.

MAIN DUTIES:

·    Support the Unit Manager and the Multidisciplinary Team in the delivery of Catheter Lab Services.

·    Assess, plan, implement and evaluate specialist care for every patient during your span of duty, ensuring appropriate delivery and note keeping.  Supervise and support less experienced staff in their care delivery.

·    Monitor changes in all patients’ conditions and prioritise emergency and urgent care.  Instigate necessary treatments in accordance with medical instructions.  Organise the staff resources to best meet these priorities continually across a span of duty.

·    Constantly use judgement and clinical knowledge to assess a variety of complex clinical parameters that indicate responses to treatments, to meet medical treatment goals.  Supervise and support less experienced nursing and medical staff in this process.

·    Communicate complex condition related information to the patient and the Multidisciplinary Team, Recovery, ward staff and Coronary Care staff whilst maintaining confidentiality.  Supervise and support less experienced nursing and medical staff in this process.

·    Communicate complex condition related information to the patient and the tertiary centre and transport patients via emergency ambulance with complex medical equipment.

·    Act as a teacher; mentor and assessor for developing staff to support their continued development in Catheter Lab.

·    Maintain own practice at an exemplary level and be guided in practice by recommendations from Trust, Network and National Bodies.

·    Support the continued development of local practice to meet the above recommendations.

·    Support less experienced staff in their development of key communication skills necessary to work effectively in the Cardiac Catheter Lab.

·    Access support and supervision to enhance continued development, attending and leading unit group activities.

·    Work with other professionals to meet patient needs e.g. Doctors, Radiographers and Cardiac Physiologists, Pre-Assessment Staff, Recovery Staff, ward staff and Coronary Care Staff.

·    Remain up to date and professionally accountable to NMC codes of conduct.

·    Ensure effective use of staff and clinical skills in relation to patient’s condition whilst the patient is in the catheter lab.

·    Ensure appropriate use of all resources e.g. safe use of specialist equipment and associated supplies.

·     Support the Unit Manager in developing services and staff within the catheter lab and lead on aspects of change as delegated.

·     Promote effective communication and team harmony always demonstrating the trust behavioural framework.

·     Ensure prompt action to deal with any complaints as per Trust policy.  Aim to resolve any at local level where possible.  Participate in complaint investigation as required.  Ensure appropriate recording and reporting of complaints.

·     Accept delegated responsibilities for staff management including performance reviews and development planning.

·     Participate in the recruitment and selection of staff as required and sickness absence reporting.

·    Take note of all local and Trust communications.

·    Take a lead when required and participate in unit meetings.

·     Promote good relationships with other wards and departments, tertiary centres and the cardiac network..

·     Support the implementation of action plans that carry forward best practice arising from local and national benchmarking activities.  Support the catheter lab clinical governance activity agenda. Participate and lead developmental activities as required and contribute to the development of nursing guidelines / protocols

·     Participate and lead if required in catheter lab audit activity.

·     Work always to maintain a safe environment for catheter lab users and promote a positive risk management culture.

·     Identify potential hazards, undertaking appropriate risk assessments and implement action plans for these.

·     Ensure all health and safety policies are implemented.

·     Ensure all equipment is correctly used and maintained. Ensure staff with appropriate skills and /or supervision are allocated to use it.

·     Attend/ complete annual mandatory updates.

·     Report all critical incidents as per Trust policy.

·     Ensure safe storage and handling of hazardous substances and waste. Monitor staff compliance with safe operating procedures and codes of practice. Report non-compliance as required.

·     Implement all Trust policies.

·     Ensure the correct care, custody and administration of drugs including undertaking expanded roles such as preparation and administration of intravenous additives and administration.

·    Support peoples equality and diversity rights.

·   Continue the development of specialist professional knowledge, underpinned by theoretical knowledge and extensive catheter lab experience.

·    Act as a professional resource and role model.

·    Act as a mentor / preceptor and assessor as required to support individual development.

·    Support all pre and post registration course students as required.

·    Support Trust and Network developments as required.

·    Comply with the requirements of mandatory training and PREP.

  • Significant experience as NMC registered nurse in Cardiac Cath Lab
  • Understands cardiac anatomy & physiology with evidence of cardiac specific university-based course.
  • Demonstrates clinical credibility. The ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Able to perform complex dexterous tasks including scrub assist for chronic total occlusion angioplasty and BIVENT PPM’s
  • Able to work in lead PPE for long periods
  • Able to manage priorities during emergency situations.
  • Confident at dealing with people over the telephone and face to face and virtually.
  • Competent at using a computer and digital systems.
  • Rotate over 24 hours if required, including 24/7 on call, weekend and Bank Holiday working
  • Able to manage emotionally intense circumstances.
