Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and enthusiastic Band 6  Respiratory & Sleep  Nurse Specialist to  join the Sleep service Team within the Respiratory Directorate based in Royal Blackburn Hospital ,Burnley General Hospital  and Rossendale Health Centre.

The successful candidate will be working across the hospitals in the Sleep service  Team in the Respiratory Directorate in hospital outpatient clinics; in the Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) and providing Sleep service CPAP and NIV/Oxygen  support to patients.  This post requires the ability to be able to provide flexible daytime shift working across 5 days. Weekends may be required depending on needs of the service.

The service is committed to training and developing staff within their role and any required training will be provided.

Please note that the salary advertised is for full time hours.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to work at highly  specialist level  within the Respiratory and Sleep service Team . The respiratory service and Sleep Service  consists of  Respiratory Nurse Specialist team , Respiratory Physiology , ANPs, Doctors and Respiratory Diagnostics and  the RAU team,  who all work collaboratively to deliver expert respiratory care.

The successful candidate should possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be able to demonstrate a problem solving approach to their work and be flexible to work across the pathways of care within clinical settings of the Respiratory and Sleep  Service.

Key responsibilities will include the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care, be responsible for ensuring effective systems and processes are in place to facilitate the education and training of all non specialist staff and students.

 As the service covers a wide geographical area (East Lancashire) a car driver is essential

The Respiratory and Sleep Service within the  Respiratory Directorate, sits in Medicine and Emergency Care Division and   is based in Royal Blackburn Hospital, Burnley General Hospital, St Peters centre and Rossendale Health Centre

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To provide a responsive service to patients aiming to maintain patients in their own home and avoid unnecessary admissions and expediting early discharge to Health and Social care.
  • To work autonomously (i.e. usually non direct clinical supervision) in the clinical assessment and management of patients with respiratory diseases.
  • To assess patients who require NIV/CPAP therapy, providing advice and support to ensure safety, supporting patients
  • To advise and support other health professionals, patients and carers to improve care of patients with respiratory conditions
  • To support patients at end of life, working with colleagues.
  • To promote, support and assist in Health promotion services for patients.
  • To provide inpatient specialist input to Respiratory patients
  • To provide specialist clinical input to the Outpatient Clinics within the Respiratory Directorate.
  • Ensure that all existing procedures and protocols relating to the care of patients are reviewed and updated as required
  • To provide mentorship to students as we are a teaching area for Student nurses

  • NMP v300 course
  • respiratory diploma-COPD/Asthma
