Main duties of the job

We’re looking for midwives who are as passionate as we are about providing the best service possible.  It goes without saying that you will demonstrate a caring and compassionate nature and attention to detail.

You will be an excellent communicator, with good listening and advocacy skills to ensure women and their families are heard, helping them to achieve a high quality, positive and safe experience through the effective planning and management of individualised care.

You will have the opportunity to learn new skills and will be expected to maintain your own professional development and knowledge to enhance your skills in this role.

The role will involve supporting the maternity ward area leads in maintaining oversight and management of the maternity ward and offering support and guidance to junior midwives, and learners from all areas of the MDT  in this complex area.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties to include, but not be limited to: 📋

  • Assist and support the maternity ward manager in the safe, effective management of the area including management of personnel, facilities and the associated systems and processes 🏥
  • Act as a role model, presenting a positive image of self, team and the organisation 🌟
  • Be responsible for the delivery and co-ordination of care, through appropriate professional practice, delegation and supervision of duties carried out by less experienced staff 👩‍⚕️
  • Ensure a high standard of Midwifery care is delivered by self and others based on assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care to meet women's needs in accordance with agreed local and National standards and evidence based guidelines 📈
  • Set, monitor and maintain standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of care 📋
  • Proactively manage risk and maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines ⚠️
  • Communicate all relevant information to the multidisciplinary team internally and with external organisations as required, to ensure seamless care 🗣️
  • Promote provision of education and health promotion 📚
  • Promote equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting and meeting the needs and choices of individuals 🌐
  • Ensures environment of care is safe, well equipped and compliant with standards for hygiene and cleanliness

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • Appropriate NMC Registration
  • NMC recognised Mentorship qualification or willingness to work towards, following 18 months commencement in post
  • Evidence of continuing education or development
Desirable criteria
  • Degree

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experince in IV additives, venepuncture and Cannulation, Perineal suturing
  • Awareness of changes within Midwifery practice
  • Able to manage /treat obstetric emergencies in hospital/birth unit setting
  • Knowledge of Clinical Governance and the relevance to practice
  • Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
  • Maintains own reflective practice.
  • Demonstrates effective listening skills and communication skills.
  • Confident in teaching and assessing student midwives, midwives and doctors.
  • Ability to implement changes within midwifery practice.
  • Recent care experience within the maternity ward inpatient setting
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence clinical competence in area of speciality
  • Knowledge of Leadership and management
  • Research and Development knowledge/experience
