We have an exciting opportunity to welcome a new addition to our Epilepsy Specialist Nursing Team. This is a new role, as part of an exciting project, which is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking for the next step in their career and wanting to receive specialist training. This is a fixed term post for 12 months to cover maternity leave.
In this role as an Epilepsy Specialist Nurse, you would be joining a team of experienced and forward-thinking Specialist Nurses.
Within this role you will have opportunities to work alongside specialist Nurses, our Consultants with a specialist interest in Epilepsy and Administrative staff.
The service provides advice, guidance and review to adults who have received a diagnosis of Epilepsy. These could be within our busy outpatient department, inpatient setting or within MDT held clinics/home visits/Other Trusts etc.
Hospital based although at least 40% is wider community ie home visits, clinics in other Hospitals in our large geographical area, which covers East Lancs, Central and North Lancs, South Cumbria and Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde, Driving therefore is essential.

Main duties of the job

As an Epilepsy Specialist Nurse, you will play a pivotal role in delivering expert assessment, education, and management for patients with epilepsy in both inpatient and outpatient settings. You’ll work closely with neurologists, specialist nurses, multidisciplinary teams, and community partners to ensure a seamless, patient-centred pathway.

You will:

  • Provide specialist clinical advice, support, and education to patients, families, and carers
  • Undertake nurse-led clinics, telephone reviews, and care coordination
  • Support safe and effective treatment plans, including medication optimisation
  • Contribute to service development and quality improvement initiatives
  • Deliver staff training and promote best practice in epilepsy management
  • Act as an advocate for patients living with epilepsy, supporting self‑management and independence

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• To provide specialist advice, support and education to patients, and their families/carers upon diagnosis of Epilepsy.
• To act as a nurse specialist in raising the profile of the Epilepsy service.
• Provide ongoing care and establish professional trusting relationships with individual patients. Support the patient and family with their ongoing management of Epilepsy, within both hospital and community settings.
• Liaising with voluntary agencies as appropriate.
• To work within a multidisciplinary team as the specialist clinical nurse resource to other health professionals and allied agencies, on
issues relating to the care of patients with diabetes, ensuring that current, evidence based information and advice is available.
• To develop evidence based guidelines and write protocols/policies for the management of the patient with Epilepsy in line with current
NICE guidance and Best Practice Guidance, where appropriate/identified.
• Provide written, evidence based patient information at appropriate stages of the patient’s disease progression and evaluate the
effectiveness of interventions and treatment protocols.
• Have an active role in the delivery of structured education.
• Be responsible for ensuring the planning, delivery and evaluation of care to meet the personalised health and wellbeing care needs of
patients, in line with the Trust’s Values & Nursing & Midwifery Professional Framework.
• Act as a strong role model and provide development, clinical supervision and advice for other staff and students to support them in
reaching their full potential. To provide both formal and informal training and teaching sessions in a variety of health, education and
regional conference settings.
• To ensure the productive operation of the team environment through the maintenance of a safe, clean and organised environment.
• To act at all times in a manner that upholds the Trust’s values & Nursing & Midwifery Professional Framework goals, working as part of a team to ensure that patients and relatives receive excellent care with compassion.

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • Appropriate NMC registration
  • Diploma in Nursing
  • Degree in health-related subject
  • Mentorship qualification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in and knowledge of Neurology Medicine and Epilepsy
  • Knowledge of Clinical Governance and its implementation
  • Evidence of clinical competence in area of speciality
  • Knowledge of local/national Health and Social Care policy
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of managing complex Neurology patients
  • Experience in nurse led clinics
  • Experience of audit and research
  • Awareness of current relevant national service frameworks / guidance
