Job overview
We are looking to recruit an experienced haemodialysis nurse as Band 7 Unit Manager to lead the delivery of haemodialysis treatment to patients.
We are a 28 station hub unit and work closely with the 6 satellite dialysis units across the region, the renal ward at Preston and our Home Therapy Unit based at Chorley that make up our renal service.
The unit is open from 7am to 9pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 5pm Sunday. We also have an on call service overnight for out of hours, emergency dialysis.
The post holder will lead an enthusiastic team of staff to ensure a high standard of care is provided to our dialysis patients and ensuring that the unit and services are utilised efficiently and effectively.
Main duties of the job
- To work at a senior level within the department using clinical skills and knowledge to give advice and support to staff, patients and relatives.
- Leading the clinical team in planning effective, timely and safe haemodialysis care in line with Trust/departmental protocols.
- Provide professional leadership within the nursing environment and foster collaborative partnerships with the multi-professional team.
- Actively participate in the development and delivery of appropriate training for all staff, ensuring all staff are updated clinically and professionally.
- Lead the nursing service within the department to ensure there are consistent standards of care using an holistic approach.
- Manage staff rotas, annual leave and sickness/absence appropriately.
- Take an active role in delivery of renal services, including the development and expansion of the service, working with the matron and key stakeholders.
- Manage the appraisal system for the staff with personal development plans and reviews.
- Work closely with all members of the MDT

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Management of staffing throughout the department.
- Management of sickness, absence and annual leave of staff.
- Management of staff appraisals.
- Leading the team of staff to maintain standards of care across the department.
- Work closely with the MDT to ensure delivery of efficient, adequate haemodialysis.
- Overseeing of all audits for the department.
- Close liaison with renal satellite units across the service to ensure smooth transition of patient care between areas.
- Oversee staff training to ensure all staff members are updated clinically and professionally.
- Be proactive in the development of the service and bringing about positive change.

Qualifications & Education
Essential criteria
- Appropriate NMC Registration
- Mentorship qualification
- Post Registration Qualifications – Renal Course
- Degree in Nursing or higher
- Successful completion of a leadership and development programme equivalent to the Internal Band 6 Leadership and Development programme
Desirable criteria
- Level 4 ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) or equivalent
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Able to perform clinical duties commensurate to that of the role – haemodialysis, IV medications, Cannulation.
- Ability to Implement changes within nursing practice
- Knowledge of Clinical Governance and Safeguarding and the relevance of these to practice
- Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
- Knowledge of ethical issues
- Evidence of clinical competence in area of renal and haemodialysis
Desirable criteria
- Experience of managing a clinical area
- Knowledge of the PDPR Process
- Evidence of working at Band 7
- Experience of budgetary management
