Job overview

You will be joining a team who are dedicated to the high standard of nursing care given to our patients, who have a passion for nursing as well as an enthusiasm for championing the needs of the patient and their families and carers.

Ribblesdale Ward is the Oncology Ward based at the Royal Preston Hospital. The ward has just completed a major renovation program into a purpose built oncology ward with state of the art facilities.

We are looking to build a team of enthusiastic, hard-working, motivated staff who provide excellent care with compassion and we are offering you the opportunity to join us.

Please note this role will be for 12 hour shifts, both day and nights.

The shifts are 0700 - 1930 and 1930 - 0700. There is no set pattern. It is a minimum of 1 set of nights in a 4 week roster and a minimum of 1 weekend also in the 4 week roster.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties to include but not be limited to:

  • Provide good quality personalised care in accordance with agreed local and national standards.
  • Take samples from patients for testing or dispatching eg: Urine, sputum, faeces, MRSA swabs, 
  • Assist patients to meet nutritional needs in line with their individual care plan.
  • Undertake clinical duties relevant to clinical area following achievement of competencies.
  • Assist to maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Assist in maintaining standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of care.  
  • Contribute to maintaining safe, clean, and productive care environment, compliant with standards for hygiene and cleanliness. 
  • Actively try to resolve issues and complaints at local level and then report the outcome to line manager.
  • Ensure storage and utility areas are kept clean and tidy.
  • Participate in departmental audits

Person specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • GCSE Maths & English grade C or above OR level 2 numeracy skills and level 2 literacy skills
  • BNCS or NVQ in Health Level 2

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience of working in an acute health care or related setting
  • Understanding of health and safety issues within healthcare
  • Understanding of the role of a band 2 HCA
  • Understanding of concept and application of confidentiality
  • Basic IT skills
Desirable criteria
  • Previous hospital experience
