Rainbow ward are seeking an enthusiastic Paediatric nurse to join their busy acute Paediatric ward  working within Wrightington Wigan and Leigh. We are keen to recruit an experienced nurse who is looking to develop their professional leadership and clinical skills within acute paediatrics.

Rainbow ward is a paediatric service ran by a friendly, dynamic, talented team of professionals; we deliver high quality, compassionate care to the local community and beyond. We operate a 24-hour, 7 day a week shift pattern this will include weekends and nights on a rotational basis.

Main duties of the job

As a band 6 Paediatric nurse on Rainbow ward you will form part of an established nursing team, you will act as a senior, positive role model for your colleagues, demonstrate clinical competence and effective leadership skills. You will be responsible for coordinating shifts, allocating duties to junior staff members and ensuring patient safety is prioritised by communicating effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team. The nurse is required to deputise for the senior sister, ensuring that clinical standards are maintained and that trust policies and procedures are adhered to. You will need to be confident or willing to learn how to solve problems, make decisions and escalate concerns appropriately.

You will deliver individualised, holistic care to a diverse population, acknowledging the needs of the patient and family. You must be skilled in communication so that you are able to fulfil this requirement effectively. As a band 6 you will be required to utilise your assessment skills to assess, monitor and prioritise patient care. Working with the medical team you will ensure patients receive the care they need in an appropriate time scale. Children may have urgent critical care needs that require prompt action, you should be confident to respond to these situations and support the team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will demonstrate responsibility for:
Identifying what is required of self and others in delivering individualised patient care. This includes assisting with the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of these programmes of care within the agreed standards of care.
Developing competencies in self which safeguard practice and effectiveness in role. Ensuring compliance with NMC Code of Conduct.
The effective use of allocated resources within the ward/department to ensure effective clinical management of patients is achieved.
Demonstrating awareness of and participation in development to meet demands and adapt to the changing needs of the service.
Empowering self and colleagues to creatively meet professional and organisational objectives.
Develop management and leadership skills and principles to develop outpatient care.
Planning and Organisational Duties
The post holder will participate in, and influence, care delivery by:
Acting as a catalyst in questioning expert professional knowledge within the team influencing application of theory in practice.
Identifying, maintaining and improving the quality of care through evidence-based practice.
Communications and Key Working Relationships
Use the spoken and written word to influence outcomes.
Assist in the establishment of communications systems with all the stakeholders to promote understanding and goodwill.
Maintain compliance with the data protection act 1988 and information governance ensuring confidentiality is adhered too.
Maintain accurate and timely records.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RSCN / RN child branch
  • ENB 998 or eqivilant
  • HDU Qualifaction
Desirable criteria
  • Degree in child health or working towards
  • Leadership / Management qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a band 5 staff nurse within a child health setting
  • Ability to work as a member of a team or independently
  • Demonstrate ability as expert role model
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working within an integrated paediatric unit

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate good communication, team and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate self-motivational skills
  • Proven record of change management. .
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of undertaken / involvement in research/audit

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of up to date underpinning theoretical knowledge
  • Demonstrate specialist knowledge of current political & ethical issues
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate knowledge of wider organisational issues
