Band 5
Job overview
The post holder will work predominantly in the scrub practitioner role, delivering high‑quality peri‑operative care across a range of surgical specialities. While the primary focus of the role will be scrub practice, rotation across other theatre roles—including circulating, anaesthetic and recovery duties—will be required to support service needs and maintain a flexible, resilient workforce.
The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of peri‑operative care programmes, ensuring patient safety and positive outcomes throughout the surgical pathway. They will work as part of the multidisciplinary theatre team and may, on occasion, take responsibility for the coordination and supervision of theatre staff for an operating list or span of duty.
Goole theatres primarily undertake urology, orthopaedic and ophthalmology surgery, with occasional general surgery activity.
Multi‑skilling is actively encouraged, and the department is committed to supporting the ongoing development of clinical skills through training and supervised practice.
Main duties of the job
Prepare, check and lay up sterile instruments, equipment and consumables appropriate to the planned procedure, working under the direction of senior practitioners when required. Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team, providing instruments, sutures and materials safely and efficiently.
Participate in the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist and undertake swab, needle and instrument counts in line with Trust policy, reporting and escalating any discrepancies immediately. Handle and maintain the integrity of surgical instruments during procedures and ensure the correct preparation, labelling and documentation of pathology specimens prior to dispatch. Assist with the safe use of surgical equipment, including diathermy and tourniquets, within scope of practice, training and competence.
Maintain strict aseptic technique throughout the peri‑operative period and adhere to infection prevention and control policies, including hand hygiene and the appropriate use of personal protective equipment. Contribute to maintaining a safe operating environment for patients and staff.
Prepare the theatre environment prior to operating lists, ensuring equipment and supplies are available and functional, and report equipment faults promptly. Support effective theatre turnaround while maintaining patient safety and quality of care. Assist with post‑procedure decontamination and preparation for subsequent cases.
