Job overview

Labour Ward Coordinator at Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust provides high-level midwifery leadership and operational management of the delivery suite and labour ward/LDRP team. The role ensures the safe, effective coordination of maternity services, offering expert clinical guidance across antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care, particularly for women with complex needs. Acting as a professional role model, the post holder delivers specialist, evidence-based practice underpinned by strong theoretical knowledge and extensive practical experience across all areas of the maternity department.

Main duties of the job

The Labour Ward Coordinator provides senior clinical leadership to ensure the safe, effective, and efficient running of the labour ward during each shift. The post holder will maintain oversight of all women receiving care, prioritising workload according to clinical need and ensuring timely escalation where risks are identified. They will coordinate patient flow across the maternity service, including admissions, transfers, and discharges, while ensuring safe staffing levels and appropriate allocation of midwifery staff.

The coordinator will work closely with the multidisciplinary team, including obstetricians, anaesthetists, and neonatal staff, to facilitate high-quality, woman-centred care. They will lead the team during obstetric emergencies, support junior staff and students, and ensure compliance with national and local clinical guidelines, including those from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.

The role also involves supporting clinical governance through accurate documentation, incident reporting, and promoting a culture of safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement within the maternity service.

Working for our organisation

The Humber Health Partnership is one of the largest acute and community Partnership arrangements in the NHS, seeing well over one million patients every year and managing a budget of over £1.3 billion.

Made up of two Trusts - Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust (NLAG) and Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (HUTH) - our Partnership has significant ambitions and is committed to delivering world-class hospital and community services for the 1.65 million people we serve.

Together we employ nearly 20,000 staff. Our five main hospital sites are Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, Scunthorpe General Hospital and Goole and District Hospital, for NLAG and Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital for HUTH.
