Practice Educator - Preceptorship

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has become available for a RN to join the Clinical Education Team at the Royal Marsden working across all Trust sites as a Band 7 Practice Educator for Preceptorship on a 12-month secondment/fixed term contract for 0.5 WTE (18.75 hours per week). This is a great opportunity for a RN who is passionate about supporting staff in practice and is interested in developing their career within Practice Education.
 
The successful candidate will need to be passionate about practice education, work-based learning and providing support for staff in practice to transition from student to registered professional.
 
The successful candidate will need to be SACT Competent and be fully up to date with all their clinical skills to support preceptees in clinical practice. You will need to be able to demonstrate experience in assessing and supporting learners in clinical practice and able to give feedback to support development.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is responsible for provision of a high-quality learning experience for preceptees and development of preceptors at the Royal Marsden. Key elements of the role include: 

  • To ensure that systems are in place to enable all newly qualified nurses to meet Trust & local objectives in the preceptorship period to become confident and competent practitioners.
  • To work with nursing staff in clinical areas to promote a standardised approach to preceptorship, building on and improving existing initiatives.
  • To liaise with the Practice Educators, Clinical Practice Facilitators and ward/department leaders on initiatives to improve the capacity and motivation of the nursing workforce to take on the preceptorship role.
  • Support the Lead Recruitment Nurse with International Recruitment and staff to achieve NMC Outcomes for NMC pin registration.

2.1 Clinical Education– Responsibility

  • Co-lead the development and delivery of the preceptorship programme with the Royal Marsden School
  • Support preceptees and preceptors in practice, facilitating transition from student to newly registered nurse.
  • Maintain effective communication links with individuals, organisations and staff groups identified in key working relationships.
  • Attend departmental meetings as required.
  • Represent the Trust and corporate nursing education team at relevant committees as required.
  • Identify and promote shared values in pursuit of local and organisational objectives.
  • Report key trends and issues to practice-based colleagues and senior nurses on a regular basis

Person specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registration
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Educated to Degree level or equivalent.
  • Mentorship qualification of equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • PgCert in education or equivalent
  • Professional Nurse Advocate

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Sufficient post registration nursing experience in oncology or speciality to be confident and competent in using the required skills to do the job.
  • Competent in SACT administration Competent in Venepuncture and Cannulation, Medicine Management (Oral/IV), accessing Ports or willing to develop skill.

Skills Abilities/knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of effective interpersonal skills with particular ability to liaise with multidisciplinary team members
  • Ability to demonstrate self-motivation (working with minimal supervision)
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership skills
  • Ability to work accurately and reliably under pressure.
  • Knowledge of Preceptorship and key UK guidelines
  • Evidence of assessing and supporting learners in practice undergraduate and post-graduate
  • Evidence of understanding of the NHS Plan, Cancer Plan and current NHS issues
  • Computer Literacy (e.g. use of Microsoft Word and Outlook)
