Job overview
We are currently looking for enthusiastic, motivated and experienced Band 6 Staff Nurses to join the Private Patient Medical Day Unit (PPMDU)at the Royal Marsden in Chelsea. You will need to be a 1st level registered nurse, Demonstrable previous Oncology experience and experience in the administration of IV medications and chemotherapy is essential. Intravenous cannulation and venepuncture are desirable, however full training will be given. In addition you will possess excellent communication skills, be reliable, enthusiastic and an effective team member committed to providing the highest level of service for our patients.

Main duties of the job
The Royal Marsden Private Care is a dedicated private diagnostic, treatment and beyond service located the heart of Chelsea. As a specialist cancer centre, The Royal Marsden has the clinical expertise, facilities and technology to provide leading private care service.
The band 6 registered nurse for Chelsea Private Patients is an exciting role, which enables the delivery of care across the medical day unit ambulatory care setting. The main roles and responsibilities include:
To create and maintain a safe, therapeutic clinical environment for all patients and their families who come to the area. To co-ordinate all functions and activities proactively within the designated clinical environment. To develop an understanding of supervising a shift with the guidance of the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse.
To communicate effectively with members of a multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality, evidence-led care to patients and their family members.
To have specific responsibility within the MDU for those patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment. This includes the administration of systemic anti-cancer treatments (SACT).

To complete the first level assessment of the patient’s needs to gain an understanding of the physiological, psycho-social, spiritual and cultural needs of patients undergoing diagnostic tests for suspected cancer as well as those diagnosed with cancer and to develop a positive, realistic and supportive attitude to ensure that the needs of the patient and family are met. This will include:
• Counterchecking patients’ vital signs, blood results, patient body surface area, chemotherapy prescription and consent before administration of treatment.
• Educating patients on their treatment protocol such as indications and side effects.
• Ensuring necessary medication and follow up appointments are obtained.
• To promote a patient focused multidisciplinary approach to care in collaboration with carers, other health care professionals and external agencies.
To plan, document, deliver and evaluate evidence-based nursing care for patients in a responsible and efficient way.
To exercise clinical judgment and decision making about patient needs in terms of long term goals or plans.
To provide clinical leadership of the junior nursing and support workers that is motivating, supportive and sets clear boundaries resulting in high quality safe patient care.
To support a clinical learning environment that enables nursing staff to develop professionally and promotes the use of evidence in practice.
1.8. To work and support staff in the phlebotomy and Central Venous Access Device (CVAD) rooms, performing venepuncture and accessing PICC’s and Portacaths

Skills Abilities/knowledge
Essential criteria
- Evidence of a good understanding of NHS (or equivalent) reforms including those affecting cancer and relevant services.
- Budget monitoring/management experience.
- Computer literacy.
Education/Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registration
- Evidence of ongoing professional development
- Qualification in oncology or speciality
- Diploma or Degree level study (or equivalent)
- Recognised teaching qualification
- Recognised mentoring and assessing qualification
- First Level management qualification and/or experience in clinical management.
- Relevant experience post registration

- Sufficient experience to be able to undertake Ward Manager role
