Job overview

The post holder has a distinct level of responsibility to patients with skin cancer , in providing a comprehensive specialist nursing service to the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, working within a team of advanced clinical nurses. The post holder will work in conjunction with the existing Skin Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialists and specifically provide advanced nursing care to patients with local and advanced cancer.  To assist in the provision of professional and clinical leadership and expertise in the care of the patient with skin cancer acting as a resource and consultant to provide information and support to patients, carers and staff.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to liaise appropriately with all key members of the multi-disciplinary team and service users related to the specialty. In addition, the post holder will be required to liaise with their peers across the Trust, the divisional management team and appropriate corporate directorates and teams. The post holder will be expected to liaise with colleagues external to the Trust and national networks as appropriate to the specialty. 

To provide professional and clinical leadership and expertise in the care of the patient with skin cancers, acting as a resource to provide information and support to patients, carers and staff.

To take responsibility for own evidence based practice and implement and add to the body of knowledge that supports nursing practice within Skin and Melanoma care. 

To liaise effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary health care team so as to achieve a synchronised specialist service. 

To provide informal and formal teaching, e.g. academic courses provided by the School of Nursing.

To use advanced clinical judgement to plan, implement and evaluate care for patients throughout their cancer pathway

In collaboration with the existing Clinical Nurse Specialists, to formulate and/or revise relevant policies and to regularly review this following change/implementation.   To work within the procedures and policies of the Trust.

To discuss in-depth all treatment options, including research based treatments for  Skin and Melanoma with sensitivity, knowledge and expertise to enable patients to make an informed choice. To act as patient advocate when appropriate and respecting patient confidentiality   and   privacy   with   respect   for   diverse   cultural   backgrounds   and requirements.

To contribute to the training of nurses and to develop their skills to enable the relevant level of nursing intervention for the patient as assigned by the Clinical lead or Matron for Cancer Services.

 

Person specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registration
  • Evidence of on-going professional development.
  • Educated to Degree level.
  • Post graduate qualification in oncology or other speciality.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Sufficient post registration nursing experience in oncology at band 6 or above
  • Experience in at least one Oncological treatment modality (SACT, surgery or radiotherapy)
  • Knowledge and understanding of care of patients with cancer
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working as a CNS.
  • Experience in Clinical Management

Skills Abilities/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of effective interpersonal skills with particular ability to liaise with multidisciplinary team members.
  • Evidence of working well in a team.
  • Evidence of commitment to customer care initiatives.
  • Ability to make decisions, organise and prioritise.
Desirable criteria
  • Venepuncture and/or cannulation skills
  • CVAD access skills.
  • Evidence of effective negotiating and influencing skills.

Other

Essential criteria
  • Flexibility to meet the needs of the service (e.g. shift work)
  • Able to work on both sites (Chelsea & Sutton) and to be flexible to meet the needs of the role
