Job overview

The Maternity Support Worker (MSW) is expected to undertake an agreed range of skills to support the midwifery service within the inpatient maternity setting.

Working under the direction and supervision of a registered midwife, the MSW will contribute to the delivery of safe, compassionate, and high‑quality care for women, babies, and their families.

All tasks must be carried out within the framework of an individualised care plan, and the midwife remains accountable for overall care and delegation.

The MSW will be an effective and proactive member of the multidisciplinary team, providing assistance in a kind, considerate, and professional manner. The role involves supporting women holistically throughout their inpatient stay, promoting comfort, wellbeing, and positive family experiences.

Please note, if sufficient amount of applications are received, this job may close earlier than it's closing date.

Main duties of the job

Assist midwives with essential observations, including maternal vital signs and newborn observations, in line with training and competency.
Support midwives in providing postnatal care, including assistance with mobility, personal hygiene, and monitoring of general wellbeing.
Support the safe transfer of women and babies between wards, theatres, and departments.
Assist with newborn care such as bathing, nappy changes, skin‑to‑skin support, and safe handling of infants.
Promote and support infant feeding (breastfeeding and bottle feeding) under midwife guidance.
Assist with preparing clinical areas, ensuring equipment is stocked, clean, and safely maintained.
Provide compassionate, sensitive support to women and families during what can be a vulnerable time.
Encourage family involvement in newborn care where appropriate.
Support women with settling into the ward, orienting them to facilities, and responding promptly to buzzers and concerns.
Promote a calm, respectful, and supportive environment.
Accurately document care delivered (within scope of practice) in maternity records as directed.
Report any concerns or deviations from normal to the midwife immediately.
Communicate clearly and professionally with women, families, and all members of the multidisciplinary team.

Working for our organisation

Croydon Health Services NHS Trust provide hospital and community services from a number of community and specialist clinics throughout Croydon. The Trust was formed on 1st August 2010 through the integration of Croydon Community Health Services and Mayday Healthcare NHS Trust. Around 4,100 staff provide services for a population of over 360,000 people who are relatively young with a high level of ethnic diversity.

Our main hospital site, Croydon University Hospital is one of the busiest in London. Across the NHS everyone is working hard to meet growing demand and we’re no exception. But with the right people on board, we are rising to this challenge, putting our people in the driving seat, encouraging innovation and transforming our services to give local people the quality of care they deserve. Croydon Health Services puts a great deal of importance on education and training. Croydon University Hospital plays an active role in training the clinicians of the future and works in partnership with major London universities

If you want the opportunity to have a real impact, challenge yourself and be part of an NHS Trust then a career at Croydon Health Services could be just what you’re looking for.
