The Maternity Support Worker (MSW) is expected to undertake an agreed range of skills to support the midwifery service within the inpatient maternity setting.

Working under the direction and supervision of a registered midwife, the MSW will contribute to the delivery of safe, compassionate, and high‑quality care for women, babies, and their families.

 All tasks must be carried out within the framework of an individualised care plan, and the midwife remains accountable for overall care and delegation.

The MSW will be an effective and proactive member of the multidisciplinary team, providing assistance in a kind, considerate, and professional manner. The role involves supporting women holistically throughout their inpatient stay, promoting comfort, wellbeing, and positive family experiences.

Assist midwives with essential observations, including maternal vital signs and newborn observations, in line with training and competency.
Support midwives in providing postnatal care, including assistance with mobility, personal hygiene, and monitoring of general wellbeing.
Support the safe transfer of women and babies between wards, theatres, and departments.
Assist with newborn care such as bathing, nappy changes, skin‑to‑skin support, and safe handling of infants.
Promote and support infant feeding (breastfeeding and bottle feeding) under midwife guidance.
Assist with preparing clinical areas, ensuring equipment is stocked, clean, and safely maintained.
Provide compassionate, sensitive support to women and families during what can be a vulnerable time.
Encourage family involvement in newborn care where appropriate.
Support women with settling into the ward, orienting them to facilities, and responding promptly to buzzers and concerns.
Promote a calm, respectful, and supportive environment.
Accurately document care delivered (within scope of practice) in maternity records as directed.
Report any concerns or deviations from normal to the midwife immediately.
Communicate clearly and professionally with women, families, and all members of the multidisciplinary team.

  • Good communicator and understands the role of advocacy

Experience

  • Has worked either on a postnatal ward or in the community setting as a support worker
