Job overview

The Senior Staff Nurse (Endoscopy) will act as a team leader for a designated group of nurses within the unit. The post holder will assist the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in monitoring workload to ensure resources are adequate to provide a safe standard of care and maintain quality within the unit.

They will ensure all staff adhere to Trust health and safety policies and will take charge of the unit during designated shifts. The role also includes supporting the Sister/Charge Nurse in managing staff performance through participation in the Trust appraisal process.

Main duties of the job

  • To act as deputy to the Sister/Charge Nurse in their absence.
  • To support the Sister/Charge Nurse in the day-to-day running of the unit and in achieving team objectives.
  • In conjunction with the Sister/Charge Nurse, to ensure that nursing practice within the ward is of high standard, evidence based and clinically effective.
  • To act as a team leader for a given group of nurses within the unit.
  • To assist the Sister/Charge Nurse in monitoring workload within the unit ensuring that resources are adequate to provide a safe standard and maintain quality of care.
  • To undertake the straight to test (STT) and Pre assessment clinics on a rotational basis following the relevant nurse led clinic pathways.
  • To ensure that all Health and Safety policies are adhered to within the unit.
  • To participate in the recruitment, selection, induction and orientation of new staff.
  • To contribute to the unit report detailing achievements and current developmental activity.
  • To deal with enquiries, concerns and complaints from patients and visitors in a courteous timely and relevant manner, informing a senior member of staff when appropriate of actions taken or, when necessary referring an enquiry to a more appropriate member of staff.
  • In conjunction with the sister/charge nurse, to investigate complaints and provide written reports, including recommendations on required actions as appropriate.

Education / Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registered Nurse
  • Preparation for Mentorship course (or ability to complete)
  • Relevant post registration specialist course or significant relevant experience
Desirable criteria
  • Specialist course such as Cardiac, HDU or respiratory

Skills/ Abilities

Essential criteria
  • The ability to effectively function as part of a multi- disciplinary team
  • The ability to assess patients; develop, implement and evaluate a plan of care
  • The ability act as a clinical leader
  • The ability to communicate effectively
  • The ability to effectively prioritise own workload, and the workload of others
  • The ability to carry out and assist in all endoscopy procedures including therapeutic cases

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantive (recent) nursing experience as a Band 5 staff nurse in an acute setting

  • Knowledge/understanding of confidentiality issues
  • A level of nursing knowledge consistent with required post registration experience and continued learning
  • NMC Code of Conduct
