Job overview

The ICU Lead Clinical Technician will provide technical leadership within the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), ensuring the safe and effective use of bedside equipment and supporting high standards of patient care. The post holder will lead and manage the Clinical Technologists and associated support teams, deliver technical training, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to optimize critical care services.

Main duties of the job

  • Represent the department in senior leadership and multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Line manage Clinical Technologists and other designated staff (including ICU Housekeeping and Portering teams).
  • Act as the technical lead for all ICU bedside equipment, ensuring functionality, safety, and readiness for clinical use.
  • Spend at least 25% of working time in clinical practice to support patient care and troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure seamless delivery of care to critically ill patients.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse/ODP
  • 1st or 2nd level registration NMC/HCPC
  • Relevant degree
  • Mentorship course
  • ENB Nursing /relevant Course to specialty
Desirable criteria
  • Possess equipment and medical devices competencies
  • A degree in Biomedical Sciences, Clinical Engineering, or a closely related discipline is essential.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable experience to a high level of competence in a relevant specialty
  • Experience of managing, supervising and appraising staff
  • Experience of managing a budget and other resources
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of Managed a team
  • Minimum 2 yrs post ICU/ENB Course

Skills and Aptitudes

Essential criteria
  • Leadership and team building skills
  • Computer skills–competent in outlook, word and excel
  • Ability to communicate concisely and effectively both in writing and verbally e.g. to overcome language barriers, when teaching patients and staff, to elicit information from patients regarding private matters, health problems and health status
  • Ability to prioritize workload
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Competent to administer intravenous medication
  • Competent in intravenous cannulation / phlebotomy.
