Job overview
The Trust is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children and Young People (CYP) to provide strategic and clinical leadership across its acute services.
As a senior safeguarding professional within the integrated safeguarding team, the post holder will lead on the development, delivery and assurance of high-quality, statutory-compliant safeguarding arrangements for CYP. The role involves providing expert clinical advice, professional supervision and leadership to staff across the organisation, ensuring safeguarding practice is safe, effective and aligned with national guidance, including Working Together to Safeguard Children (2023) and CQC requirements.
The post holder will play a key role in driving a strong safeguarding culture, embedding learning from national and local reviews, and strengthening multi-agency partnerships with health, social care, police and voluntary sector partners (partner agencies). This is a pivotal role in supporting the Trust’s commitment to protecting children and promoting their welfare.
Main duties of the job
- Provide advanced specialist clinical advice and leadership on all aspects of safeguarding children and young people, including complex and high-risk child protection cases.
- Demonstrate a high level of legal literacy, including the Children Act, family law, and statutory safeguarding guidance, supporting staff in clinical decision-making and legal processes.
- Act as a trusted source of expert advice for healthcare professionals on sensitive, emotive, and complex safeguarding matters.
- Lead and influence the Trust’s safeguarding children strategy, policies, and internal governance arrangements in line with Working Together to Safeguard Children (2023) and CQC requirements.
- Deputise for the Head of Safeguarding as required and contribute to service development, workforce planning, and recruitment.
- Develop, review, and implement safeguarding policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines, ensuring learning from national and local reviews is embedded into practice.
- Fulfil the statutory role of Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children in accordance with the Safeguarding Accountability and Assurance Framework and the NMC Code.
- Lead the Trust’s response to Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews (CSPRs), Serious Incidents, and other statutory enquiries, ensuring learning is disseminated and implemented.
- Oversee safeguarding audit, performance monitoring, and data analysis, providing assurance and reports through Trust governance structures and to senior leadership.

Person specification
Wide knowledge and working : safguarding children and child protection
Essential criteria
- Leadership skills and team management
- Extensive post qualifying experience and robust understanding of safeguarding legislation.
- Experience in the development of risk management/clinical governance and assurance processes.
- Experience in leading all aspects of safeguarding for example: handling complex child protection and safeguarding cases from a multi-agency perspective.
- Wide knowledge and working within safguarding children and child protection process for minimum of two years.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of the child safeguarding practice review process.
Experience of working within a health care setting.
Essential criteria
- Current NMC registration as an RN Child or RN Adult with Registered SCPHN/Midwife Portfolio. First level degree in Nursing or health related subject or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
- Masters level study or equivalent or working towards it.
