Job overview
In this role, you’ll deliver high‑quality, patient‑centred care across all areas of the department, carrying out assessments, planning and evaluating care, and responding to a wide range of clinical presentations. You’ll develop advanced clinical skills including triage, cannulation, wound care, emergency response and support with minor procedures.
You’ll work closely with patients, relatives and the multidisciplinary team, communicating clearly in a pressured environment while maintaining professionalism and compassion. You’ll uphold Trust policies, maintain accurate documentation and contribute to continuous improvement, audits and evidence‑based practice.
As a Band 5 nurse, you will also play an important part in supporting learners, new starters and HCAs—helping to create a positive learning culture while developing your own clinical and professional skills.

Main duties of the job
Clinical Duties
- Deliver high‑quality nursing care independently and safely across all areas of ED.
- Carry out initial patient assessments, maintain and update care plans, and escalate concerns.
- Meet patients’ basic care needs (nutrition, hydration, hygiene).
- Adhere to infection prevention and control standards at all times.
- Administer, document, and safely manage medicines in line with Trust policy.
- Recognise and respond to deteriorating patients, including initiating basic life support.
- Assist with clinical procedures (plastering, wound closure, phlebotomy, cannulation).
- Maintain effective relationships with patients and their relatives.
Communication
- Use de-escalation skills with potentially aggressive patients.
- Provide clear information to patients—especially those discharged directly from ED.
- Maintain professional, non‑judgemental communication, including with patients in police/immigration custody.
Managerial Responsibilities
- Use resources and equipment economically and appropriately.
- Keep accurate, legible, NMC‑compliant clinical records.
- Handle patient property safely according to Trust policy.
- Escalate and help resolve complaints; report incidents and support initial investigations.
- Follow Trust policies including safeguarding, sickness/absence, annual leave and child protection

- Valid NMC Registration
- Awareness of current A&E issues
- Awareness of current professional nursing issues
Desirable criteria
- Mentorship in Practice course
- Intermediate Life Support course
- Six months medical or surgical ward experience
- Evidence of successful ED clinical placement during training
