Main duties of the job

As an Advanced Emergency Care Practitioner (AECP) / Paramedic you will deliver high quality care, ensuring standards are consistently high.  You will do this by being competent and having the knowledge to deliver comprehensive assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care. 

You will provide high quality emergency care and minor injury treatment to patients with both primary care and acute care needs in a prison setting by playing an active part in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the patients care.

You will be responsible for carrying out full and thorough clinical and risk assessment for the people in your care, seeing them holistically, being sensitive to their needs and escalating that risk to senior staff where necessary.

We will expect you to lead person centred care with plans that people are encouraged to be involved with and which you seek feedback on to make sure they are meeting their needs. You will also develop and implement individualised care plans that will deliver high quality care that is evaluated and continually improved.

You will be responsible for carrying out full and thorough physical health  assessments and regular monitoring of the people in your care, ensuring that their fundamental care needs are assessed and attended to including nutrition, hydration, comfort and hygiene and producing excellent quality documentation which follows the trust record keeping standards

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical

  • As an Oxleas AECP / Paramedic you will ensure that care is always delivered in collaboration with the key people involved and will provide support and information to the people in your care and to their carers where appropriate.
  • You will be directly involved in handling and administering prescribed medication and controlled drugs and involved in procedures where you are expected to be appropriately trained and competent i.e. suturing and wound care.
  • You will monitor physiological observations by undertaking a full assessment using a structured and prioritized approach and the recognition of the acutely ill patient e.g. ABCDE approach, ECG recognition, pathways for CVA and the diagnosis and referral of a range of cardiac conditions.
  • You will complete all patient documentation associated with an episode of patient using Systmone clinical record.
  • The post holder will exercise a degree of personal and professional autonomy, make complex and critical judgments under the management of the Primary Care Clinical Lead and have decision making skills to satisfy the expectations of the role

 

Management Responsibilities

  • To lead in the implementation of effective and appropriate patient centred care planning tools / Care Programme Approach (CPA) and consistent delivery throughout all the prisons and forensic units within the service.
  • To work autonomously across the healthcare settings ensuring all junior staff receive appropriate supervision
  • To attend and manage medical emergencies being first point of contact for patient care.
  • The post holder will participate in all service reviews as required .

 Leadership

  • To demonstrate and provide robust clinical leadership to junior staff with a sound understanding of evidence based nursing practice to provide a pro-active approach to ensure quality and outcome driven practice on a day-to-day basis.
  • To lead in the professional clinical supervision programme, to ensure all junior staff receive appropriate supervision, training and annual appraisal to ensure that it becomes an integral part of team practice.
  • Lead in the identification of all aspects of specific service, training and personal development needs.

 

IMPORTANT INFORMATION, PLEASE READ: 

All applicants must be willing to undertake National Security Vetting in order to work in a Prison Setting. This will be completed as part of the pre-employment checks through Oxleas and the prison vetting team.

Non-UK passport holders will need to have correct documentation (right to work in the UK) and a Home office Share code.  

 

Address History:  

5 years address history will be needed.   

Applicants that are not UK Passport holders who provide less than 5 years UK address history will need to provide a Police Certificate which must be in English from where they resided previously.  

Applicants who are UK Passport holders who have lived abroad for a period of more than six months during the last three years will need to provide a certificate of good conduct or an overseas police check in English from the countries resided in or visited.

Person specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • A good general education, with evidence of formal qualifications at GCSE/A level or above.
  • The post holder should hold a recognised higher education qualification for example Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing / Paramedic Science, Paramedic Studies or Paramedic Practice or have the BTECH Level 4 Paramedic qualification.
  • Registered as a Nurse with NMC or Paramedic with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) and have current registration. Professional registration is the sole responsibility of the Nurse / paramedic, and failure to remain on the register may lead to suspension from duty.
  • Evidence of undertaking regular update training and continuous personal/professional development in accordance with NMC / HCPC regulations.
  • A commitment to personal and professional development is essential and membership of the College of Paramedics (or an appropriate professional body) is desirable.
  • First Resources on Scene Course (or willing to undertake within 12 months of appointment)

Experience/Skills

Essential criteria
  • In-depth knowledge of Emergency nurse / paramedic-led care and the treatments/ interventions and their application in a prison environment.
  • Understanding and or experience secure environments and/or acute settings.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

Abilities/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Emotionally resilient and be able to deal with trauma injuries
  • Understanding of clinical audit and governance
  • Current knowledge of local and national policies informing Critical Care
