Job overview

West London Children's Healthcare (WLCH) are recruiting two Band 7 Paediatric Allergy Clinical Nurse Specialists, with one post allocated to each site across the WLCH network:

  • St Mary’s Hospital
  • Chelsea & Westminster Hospital
  • West Middlesex University Hospital

These new posts will strengthen paediatric allergy care across WLCH by providing advanced clinical expertise, improving continuity, and supporting the delivery of safe, high‑quality care for children and young people with asthma.

Candidates are welcome to apply for a specific site or to be considered for all three posts.

Main duties of the job

The Paediatric Allergy Clinical Nurse Specialist is responsible for the delivery and development of specialist allergy services for children and young people across North West London.  Working within the paediatric allergy multidisciplinary team, the role will support improved outcomes, reduced unwarranted variation, and high-quality, equitable allergy care.

 The Band 7 CNS shall be expected to lead and manage his/her own patient cohort. In addition, work as part of the clinical nurse specialist team, cross covering patient cohorts where necessary and working alongside the MDT at all times.

The role involves working within a seamless specialist asthma / respiratory and allergy medical and nursing service that is aimed at continuously improving standards of patient care and facilitating multi-professional working. This will be achieved through clinical practice, management, education, research and audit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Paediatric Asthma Clinical Nurse Specialist will provide expert, evidence‑based care to children and young people with asthma, undertaking holistic assessments, managing a specialist caseload, and running nurse‑led clinics across acute, community, and primary care settings.

The role involves developing personalised asthma management plans, supporting self‑management education, and ensuring safe prescribing and medication management.

The post holder will work collaboratively with families, GPs, schools, and the wider multidisciplinary team to coordinate care, address safeguarding concerns, and promote consistent best practice. They will contribute to service development through quality improvement, audit, data analysis, and implementation of national and local guidelines.

 In addition, the role includes supporting colleagues through teaching, supervision, and leadership, while maintaining personal professional development and clinical competence. Effective, inclusive communication and accurate documentation are essential, alongside active participation in ICS network meetings, Trust initiatives, and multidisciplinary discussions to enhance asthma outcomes across the region.

Education Qualifications & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Registered Children's Nurse active on NMC register
  • Student assessor or mentorship qualification
  • Relevant BSc degree in nursing
  • Professional development within paediatric Asthma
  • Level 3 Safeguarding training
  • Significant post registration experience working with children who have respiratory illnesses, allergies or asthma
  • Sound knowledge of specialist paediatric asthma care, including pathophysiology, management protocols, and evidence-based practice
  • Understanding of child protection procedures and safeguarding
  • Ability to deliver asthma education and self-management support to children, young people, and families
  • NHS England Tier 3 – Asthma in Children and Young People
  • Understanding of resource management, health and safety, clinical risk and quality
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and lead clinical workload.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and listening skills
  • Excellent problem solving and decision making skills
  • Awareness of current NHS issues & appreciation of the issues surrounding governance & quality initiatives.
  • Knowledge of NHS governance, quality initiatives, and ICS frameworks
Desirable criteria
  • Foundations of Managing Asthma – Level 5 Diploma
  • MSc in Advanced Practice or Respiratory Nursing
  • Experience working in the community setting including schools, early years settings and patients homes
  • Experience managing a specialist caseload, including complex, high-risk, or severe asthma
  • Experience or willingness to participate in audit, research, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Relevant post-registration accredited clinical course in advanced assessment
  • Leadership or management qualification
  • Ability to lead clinical workload and change initiatives, both personally and as a facilitator
  • Experience or willingness to participate in audit, research, and quality improvement initiatives

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post registration experience working with children who have respiratory illnesses, allergies or asthma
  • Excellent relevant Paediatric clinical skills including assessment of lung function (PEFR, Spirometry, FeNO), inhaler technique, asthma plans
  • Excellent managerial, leadership and organisational skills
  • Able to motivate and develop a multi-professional team
  • Experience of teaching, training, mentoring, and precepting colleagues
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working in the community setting including schools, early years settings and patients homes
  • Experience of handling clinical incidents, complaints, and safeguarding issues
  • Experience managing a specialist caseload, including complex, high-risk, or severe asthma
  • Experience in quality improvement or service development projects
