Our hospitals and community sites provide a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services, as well as emergency and planned care. The Trust is rated as “good” or “outstanding” in over three-quarters of the services inspected by the Care Quality Commission.
Every year our work includes performing 10,000 procedures in our theatres; bringing seven and a half thousand new lives into the world; carrying out 570,000 visits to patients in their homes or communities and providing emergency care for more than 300,000 patients arriving in our busy Urgent and Emergency Departments.
LGT is a centre for the education and training of medical students enrolled with King’s College London’s GKT School of Medical Education. We are a training centre for nurses, midwives and allied health professionals. We are pioneering new roles that will support the changing needs of our patients and are one of the largest employers of physician associates in the country.

Job overview
This is an exceptional opportunity for a highly motivated individual to lead and develop high-performing pre-assessment and day surgery services, while playing a pivotal role in transforming perioperative pathways across the Trust.
As Matron, you will provide visible and compassionate leadership, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective and patient-centred care. Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, operational managers and clinical leaders, you will drive service improvement, support elective recovery programmes and contribute to the strategic development of modern perioperative services.
The successful candidate will be instrumental in shaping the future of pre-operative assessment and day surgery pathways, ensuring patients receive seamless, timely and high-quality care from referral through to discharge.
Main duties of the job
An experienced senior nurse leader, ideally working at Matron, Senior Sister/Charge Nurse or equivalent level.
Knowledgeable in perioperative care, pre-assessment services, day surgery and elective pathways.
Experienced in leading service transformation and quality improvement projects.
Able to demonstrate strong operational management and workforce leadership skills.
Skilled in managing complex change and influencing across multidisciplinary teams.
Committed to delivering outstanding patient care and improving patient experience.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
Provide professional nursing leadership for Pre-Assessment and Day Unit services across the Trust.
Lead the transformation and optimisation of perioperative pathways to improve patient experience, efficiency and clinical outcomes.
Drive the development of innovative models of care that support elective recovery and national best practice standards.
Ensure the delivery of high-quality, safe and effective care through robust governance, quality improvement and risk management processes.
Lead workforce planning, staff development and succession planning to build resilient, skilled and engaged teams.
Work collaboratively with surgical, anaesthetic, operational and corporate colleagues to improve patient flow and maximise theatre utilisation.
Support the implementation of digital solutions and service redesign initiatives to enhance patient pathways.
Monitor performance against key quality, safety, activity and financial targets.
Act as a role model for compassionate leadership and foster a culture of continuous improvement and excellence.
Person specification
Qaulification and Training
Essential criteria
- Registered Healthcare Professional with relevant Professional body 1st Level Nurse/ NMC with significant experience in Nursing.
- Registered Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) with significant experience in theatre leadership.
- Master’s Degree or willingness to complete or relevant experience
- Evidence of Post Graduate Specialist qualifications relevant to area of practice (examples –:non-medical prescribing; mentorship , coaching , clinical expertise, leadership or management)
Desirable criteria
- Management or supervisory qualification / programme of study
- PTLLS/DTLLS, PGCE or Certificate in Education
Experience
Essential criteria
- Clinical expertise relevant to the post
- Experience of providing and receiving complex, sensitive information
- Leadership of clinical governance and patient safety
- Achievement of high quality patient care through evidence based practice
- Management of finances within a budget, including delivery of cost improvements
- Management/Clinical Leadership experience
