Psychiatric Liaison Nurse

NHS AfC: Band 6

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN), to apply for a Band 6 Psychiatric Liaison Nurse position within the Liaison Psychiatry Team. The Team is integrated and provides 24 hours 7 days a week for the over 18 adult liaison psychiatry service to St Mary's Hospital at Paddington in London.

Main duties of the job

The Liaison Psychiatry Team is based at St Marys Hospital site.

The Liaison Psychiatry Team is an integrated mental health team which includes psychiatric liaison nurses, psychiatrists specialising in Liaison Psychiatry, Addiction Practitioners, Hestia/Coves  and the British Red Cross providing social and practical support. The team provides assessment and consultation to any patient attending St Marys Hospital.  The Team is accredited by the Psychiatric Liaison Accreditation Network (PLAN).

We are looking for a highly motivated, suitably qualified and experienced Psychiatric Liaison Nurse who is a self-starter and can demonstrate clear leadership ability. This position is open to applicants who have post registration experience in liaison psychiatry or extensive experience carrying out assessments in acute and community mental healthcare settings . The specialist nature of this role requires us to appoint a clinician with significant knowledge and experience to this front line clinical position.

Once you have completed the initial extended induction, you will have the authority to discharge from a mental health perspective from the Accident & Emergency Department, the inpatient wards at St Mary’s Hospital, as well as work within other new initiatives within the team such as the Mental Health Emergency Assessment Centre (MHEAC).

Working for our organisation

We are  passionate about delivering first-class patient-centred, safe and effective care, whether it is in a hospital setting, in a community clinic or in the patient’s own home. Patients are at the heart of everything we do.

Providing top quality care depends on our ability to employ the best people.
We are always looking to recruit outstanding people who will go the extra mile to support our patients, colleagues, teams and the Trust. With every new employee, we are hoping to find our future leaders and we will support our staff by providing opportunities to develop your career.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Please refer to the attached job description about more information about the role.

You will be expected to have the skills to deal with a very broad range of mental health needs as well as undertaking initial mental health assessments with those whose primary problem may be substance misuse.

You will be required to make clear autonomous decisions based on an analysis of the complex presenting problems and judgements based on available treatment options.  This will include those related to the admission and discharge of patients. Once you have completed the initial extended induction, you will have the authority to discharge from a mental health perspective from both the Emergency Department and the inpatient wards at St Mary's Hospital.

Your interpersonal skills will be expected to be excellent and you must be able to confidently communicate at a high level both verbally and in writing. You must be able to demonstrate de-escalation skills with challenging and/or acutely distressed patients in potentially hostile situations.

You will be expected to be a source of mental health knowledge and expertise and be able to provide support to other staff in their day to day management of patients who present with acute psychological distress and acute mental health problems.

Liaison with health professionals at St Mary's Hospital  site and with external mental health services will be a key part of the role with the safe discharge or transfer of patients to their local mental health services being paramount.
