Job overview
TMS (Transcranial magnetic stimulation) is a treatment for people with Major Treatment Resistant Depression (TRD). TRD is the term to describe people with depression for whom standard treatments with antidepressants and psychological therapies have been unsuccessful. This form of depression is chronic and difficult to treat; it often requires inpatient carer often sometimes for an extended period.
The Tower Hamlets Neuromodulation Team is an outpatient service that provides direct care to a Service Users. The Clinic works with Consultants, NMHT’s, Wards, HTT across the borough as well as private patients and others service providers across the North East London Integrated care system.
The Clinic is responsible for ensuring high standards of care for this Service User group. In order to provide the highest standards and safest care for this client group care is standardized and centralized in order to ensure that all care is managed within a proactive specialist environment.
Within the Clinic environment the following is carried out:
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS):
- Assessing patients for Depression
- Assessing patient suitability and consenting patients for TMS.
- Coorinating the new referrals and maintaining up-to-date data on patients open to the team.
- Delivering TMS to patients who are on the caseload.
- Supervising TMS being delivered by Band 4 colleagues
Main duties of the job
- Provide clinical leadership and developments in nursing practice for TMS within East London Foundation Trust (ELFT).
- Provide a visible and accessible presence within the TMS setting within ELFT.
- Work with the Senior Operational lead/ Consultant in reviewing and implementing policies and best practice.
- To take a dynamic role within the TMS service to maximise the contribution that the recovery model, values and evidence based nursing makes to the service user journey.
- The post holder will be expected to work flexibly to achieve outcome targets.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To assist in the management of the Neuromodulation Team caseload of Service Users with complex needs who require treatment.
- To be responsible for fostering and maintaining effective communication and relationships with other teams.
- To define and prioritise needs of Service Users in conjunction with Clinic staff, using a needs led; Service User centred approach that has recovery at its core.
- To undertake safetyassessments with team members and other healthcare professionals from other agencies, recording and sharing information as necessary and within confidentiality guidelines, in a manner which is timely so as to ensure the safety of the Service User and others.
- To keep accurate up-to-date records of all contacts with Service Users and communications with other professionals involved in their care ensuring that electronic records are updated regularly and distributed as appropriate.

Eduation
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse (Mental Health Diploma, Degree, Post Graduate Diploma)
- Evidence of continued professional development
- Mentorship qualification (Supporting and assessing learning in practice settings or equivalent) or qualified Practice Assessor or willingness to complete.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Working with people with mental health and physical health problems
- Working within a multidisciplinary team environment
- Highly specialised physical/mental health care skills and knowledge
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience of working in a rTMS clinic
- Experience of clinical, managerial and budgetary responsibility for a clinic or service
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Administering TMS treatments
- Assisting patients to complete psychiatric rating scales after sessions.
- Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care appropriate to the needs of the client group and the clinical specialty
- Ability to extrapolate the potential long term negative physical effects of Neuromodulation use, e.g. metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular deterioration, type 2 diabetes, liver impairment, sexual dysfunction, bowel obstruction, seizures and death.
- Mental Health issues relevant to adults with acute mental health problems

- To take a lead in the review and creation of rTMS treatment protocols
- To take a lead with facilitating training events on rTMS for colleagues
- To take a lead with service user/carers quality outcomes and implanting these into service development
