Job overview

Are you a Nurse, Allied Health Professional, Operating Department Practitioner or do you have equivalent experience of clinical bed management within a tertiary paediatric environment?

If so, there is an exciting opportunity to join the Bed Management team based in our Operational Hub as a Bed Manager.

Reporting to the Lead Bed Manager you will be responsible for optimising capacity and patient flow across GOSH. This will support us in achieving our 'Above and Beyond' strategy to advance care for children and young people with complex health needs.

As part of the Operational Hub team you will work with the Lead Bed Manager and the wider operational and clinical team to ensure all children who need our services are located in the right place at the right time with the right staff to obtain the highest quality treatment and care.

The post holder will support the development of an open and engaging culture for patients and staff that encourages excellence in clinical practice, facilitates team working and multi professional care delivery. This will ensure that GOSH is able to treat as many children as possible as quickly as possible, achieving our aim to go 'above and beyond'.

Main duties of the job

Ensuring the safe placement of patients on elective and emergency pathways working in partnership with the clinical teams. 

Collaborating with service managers, admissions team and others to coordinate elective admissions to minimise the chance of  cancellations and maximise the use of available beds and resources.

Gathering relevant clinical information from referring services to aid the safe patient placement, paying particular attention to the child's clinical needs, infection status, safeguarding concerns and any other pertinent factors. 

Alongside the Lead Bed Manager implement the trust escalation policy to facilitate effective patient flow during times of increased pressure.

Chairing the situational awareness and other bed meetings to ascertain up-to-date demand and capacity requirements. 

Managing the safe stepdown of patients from intensive care into ward beds ensuring these patients are prioritised in line with the Trust policy. 

Ability to effectively communicate and build professional relationships different teams both clinical and non clinical to resolve any capacity issues. 

Managing information and data related to patient flow.

Managing internal and external enquiries regarding patient location.

Academic/Professional qualification/Training

  • Experience of Clinical Bed Management or ward leadership in a paediatric setting
