Job overview

Are you an experienced Specialist Screening Practitioner (SSP) ready to take the next step in your career? We’re looking for a passionate and skilled Nurse to join our team as the Lead SSP for the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP) at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

About the Programme:
The BCSP currently invites individuals aged 50–74 across our service area to participate in bowel cancer screening using the Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT), a simple home testing kit. Those with a positive result are offered a screening colonoscopy to assess for bowel cancer or pre-cancerous conditions. The programme also provides surveillance for individuals with Lynch syndrome.

The Role:
As Lead SSP, you’ll play a pivotal leadership role in ensuring the effective delivery of this vital service. You’ll guide and support a high-performing team and oversee day-to-day operations

What We’re Looking For:
NMC-registered nurse with significant clinical experience
Proven track record working as a Band 6 SSP within a bowel screening programme

Strong leadership skills with the confidence to support and develop your team.

A commitment to delivering safe, effective, and patient-centred care.

Location: Covering North West London – Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust & Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust (West Middlesex Hospital)

Service Area: Hammersmith & Fulham, Kensington & Chelsea, Hounslow, Westminster, and two-thirds of Ealing.

Main duties of the job

  • To supervise and lead a team of SSPs to ensure effective and timely service delivery.
  • To oversee the performance, scheduling, and wellbeing of SSP teams in alignment with the standards set by Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
  • To ensure accurate data collection and full compliance with BCSP (Bowel Cancer Screening Programme) guidelines.

Essential criteria
  • Current NMC registration
  • Diploma or degree in nursing
  • Possession of Liverpool John Moores University Bowel Cancer Screening Practitioner qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership training
  • Mentorship qualification

Experience / Skills

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience as Band 6 SSP
  • 2 years specialist colorectal nurse, senior endoscopy or interventional diagnostics nursing experience with line management of staff
  • Evidence of data collection, audit and analysis
  • Ability to produce reports and interpret data relating to the BCSP
  • IT skills inc. Excel, Powerpoint
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrates a knowledge of current issues related to the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme
