Job overview
We are seeking experienced Chemotherapy Nurses (Band 6) to join our dedicated oncology team. In this pivotal role, you will deliver expert, patient-centred care as a named nurse for a defined group of patients, ensuring the highest standards of practice in line with the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code and Trust guidelines.
As a Chemotherapy Nurse, you will:
- Provide specialist care and clinical leadership within the ward or department.
- Safely administer chemotherapy and intravenous treatments in accordance with Trust protocols.
- Support the Ward Manager by deputising when required and managing complex clinical situations.
- Maintain up-to-date specialist knowledge and act as a role model for best practice.
- Mentor and supervise junior staff, fostering a positive learning environment.
- Contribute to service development, quality improvement, and clinical governance initiatives, including audits and risk management.
- Communicate effectively with patients, carers, and the multidisciplinary team to enhance the patient experience.

Main duties of the job

Provide positive clinical leadership
Work collaboratively with the senior nurse team to promote high standards of specialist nursing care and support. Deputise for the line manager within the speciality, managing complex situations and taking appropriate action in a variety of settings. -
Ensure effective ward/department management
Support the senior nurse team in maintaining the smooth running of the clinical area and uphold high standards of care. -
Act as a professional role model
Demonstrate flexibility in approach, providing both direct and indirect clinical care, and contributing to teaching and research activities. -
Maintain expert oncology nursing practice
Keep up to date with developments in the speciality, complete mandatory and annual training, and utilise specialist skills and knowledge to deliver safe, effective care. -
Support the Ward Manager
Assist in the safe, efficient management of the ward and deputise in their absence to ensure continuity of leadership. -
Promote a learning environment
Encourage and participate in the supervision and teaching of junior staff and new team members, including nurses and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

Essential criteria
- Registered nurse (level 1)
- Relevant specialist course or equivalent experience in oncology nursing
- Recognised chemotherapy course or equivalent.
- Mentorship course
Desirable criteria
- Has attained or is willing to work towards Degree/Bsc in Nursing.
Experience
Desirable criteria
- Experience in people management and improving the patient experience
Skills/knowledge/ abilities
Essential criteria
- Ability to work effectively under pressure.
- Competency in medication administration including IV drugs and chemotherapy certification
- IT skills including use of email and Microsoft Office packages.
- Engages in reflective practice to facilitate learning and improvement in self and others
Desirable criteria
- Ability to appraise staff and willingness to learn new skills
