About the Role
- Minimum 4 years apheresis experience required.
- Open to paediatric or adult-trained nurses.
- Work in a modern unit with 2 treatment beds, providing a 5-day service and occasional weekend/on-call cover for emergency red cell exchanges.
- Safeguarding children and young people is a core responsibility for all staff.

Main duties of the job

Act as a professional role model and expert, leading and coordinating paediatric apheresis education and practice development in disease pathologies related to Haemoglobinopathies and Apheresis procedures.

Serve as the subject matter expert for all apheresis procedures performed at St Mary’s Hospital.

Demonstrate proficiency in cannulation and venepuncture, including ultrasound-guided cannulation.

Work collaboratively with the Clinical Director, Transplant Programme, Lead Nurse for Apheresis, Apheresis Nursing Team, and Quality Managers to ensure compliance with HTA and JACIE standards.

Coordinate apheresis procedures within the service, including:
- Automated Red Cell Exchanges (RbCX)
- Therapeutic Plasma Exchanges (TPE)
- Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Collection (PBSC)
- Donor Lymphocyte Collection (DLI)
- Granulocyte Collection
- Ensure high standards of care and efficient patient pathways.

Education & Qualifications
Essential criteria
- RN Child/RSCN/RN Adult
- Extensive Apheresis experience
- Recognised Apheresis training/certification
- Recognised teaching and mentorship qualification, i.e. SSSSA
Desirable criteria
- BSc/MSc Level education
- Postgraduate qualification in the speciality Haematology/Oncology and Haemoglobinopathies or equivalent
- Non-Medical prescriber certification
- Has a recognisable leadership/management qualification or equivalent
Skills & Abilities
Essential criteria
- Able to take charge in an acute setting
- Can demonstrate cannulation and venepuncture
- Autonomous practitioner in delivering Apheresis procedures using the Spectra Optia
- Can evidence decision making and problem solving
Desirable criteria
- Has been exposed to managing budgets
- Can demonstrate ability to perform ultrasound guided cannulation
- Evidence of continuing professional development
Experience & Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Min 2 years at Band 6 level working with this cohort of patients
- Worked in an environment where Apheresis Nursing is the main cohort of patients
- Can resource the sign-off of clinical competencies within Apheresis
- Experience in complaints and quality assurance.
Desirable criteria
- Experience in the management of Haemoglobinopathies
- Experience of change management – positive change agent
- Manage clinical governance activities that relate to own area of practice and patient group, i.e. Transition and Adolescent Health
