Neuroscience Research Nurse - Band 6 

£46,419 - £55,046 Including Inner HCAS Per annum 

Fixed term: 2 years (Full time 37.5 hrs per week)

The post holder will be responsible for co-ordinating an agreed portfolio of non-commercial and commercial clinical trials. Responsibilities will include setting up clinical trials; identifying patients through MDT’s/screening notes and increasing referrals through the data base; collecting data; interviewing; supporting and monitoring patients and data entry.

 

This patient population requires input from a compassionate and caring research professional, with experience caring for and managing patients with cancer; including working with the wider MDT to co-ordinate patient care. For multi-centre trials led at KCH, the post holder will also be expected to support investigators and their teams at recruiting sites.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be responsible for recruiting to, and following up, patients in trials and studies adopted by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR). Key responsibilities will include supporting and coordinating a broad research portfolio, ensuring trials are set up and managed in accordance with regulatory, sponsor and local Research & Innovation (R&I) requirements.

 

The post holder will work closely with the Neuro Research Matron, Senior Research Nurse/Clinical research nurses, trials Coordinator, medical staff, the Clinical Nurse Specialist Teams, the transplant co-ordinators, radiologists and the pharmacy technicians.

 

As a qualified nurse, the post holder may be delegated the responsibility for preparation/administration of trial drugs and will work closely with within the wider nursing team to ensure all drug administration and other clinical nursing responsibilities are both in line with the trial protocol and Trust procedures and guidelines.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

 Clinical Responsibilities 

·         Work in conjunction with the Research Nurse/Clinical Trials Coordinator to manage a caseload of patients, whilst working as part of a multidisciplinary team.

 

·         Maintain effective communication with patients, carers and professionals to ensure service delivery. Assist in screening patients suitable for entry into clinical trials. This will include attending clinics and Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings.

 

Information management  

·         Responsible for modifying and validating the databases and to support any development work. Maintain databases and ensure their security and compliance with the data protection act.

·         Accurately and efficiently enter data on to current databases. This will require a high level of attention to detail and accuracy.

 

Portfolio Management and Development

 

·         Assist in the review of trial protocols and identify resource implications for the site.

 

·         Set up and maintain the TMF/ISF with essential documents.

 

·         Help organise initiation meetings.

 

Professional 

 

·         Act in accordance with local policies and procedures laid down by King’s College Hospital Institute of Neuro Studies.

 

·         Work within the NMC Scope of Professional Practice, Conduct and Record Keeping.

 

·         Undertake an annual appraisal (internal performance).

 

 

Training and Development 

 

·         Attend the KHP CTO, NIHR and RDN South London training programmes and other relevant education and training days/programmes as appropriate.

 

·         Attend investigator/initiation meetings and conferences when required.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC RN1 Registration.
  • Evidence of continuous personal, professional and academic development.
  • Previous clinical research experience.
  • GCP qualification.
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant post registration qualification.
  • Post-graduate qualification with a research methodology element.
  • Previous Neuro or Paeds nursing experience.

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of Regulatory requirements pertaining to trials.
  • Ability to perform basic clinical skills (obtaining vital signs measurements).
  • Ability to perform venepuncture and cannulation.
  • Evidence of accuracy to detail in data collection.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as required.
  • Strong motivation to work within the field of Neuroscience research.
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to work across boundaries, integrating with multidisciplinary staff in relation to clinical trials.
  • Line management experience
