Lead Clinical Nurse Specialist – Band 8a
Newham University Hospital
Secondment opportunity for 18 months.
We are looking for an experienced clinical nurse specialist in pain management with ambition and vision to lead our progressive pain management service at Barts Health NHS Trust. You will be responsible for professionally leading the clinical nurse specialist team at the Newham University Hospital site.
We are a progressive inpatient pain service; therefore, the successful candidate must possess the right skills to drive forward service objectives for development and innovation whilst maintaining the day to day operation of the service.
You will be expected to work at an advanced practitioner level and promote clinical excellence throughout the team and the organisation, whilst working closely with the clinical lead, consultant colleagues and key stakeholders.

Main duties of the job
Main duties, responsibilities and results areas
· Plan and lead the pain management clinical network in conjunction with the lead clinician for pain. Oversee the professional development of nursing staff and cross-site thinking for developing standards, policies and pathways for clinical improvement and innovation, maintain an overview of governance and identify trends for service improvement, lead on audit, research and education relevant to the whole service.
· Lead on ensuring clinical practice related to pain management is delivered in accordance with local Barts Health NHS Trust Policies, National and Statutory Standards. E.g. Benchmarks against National guidance for good practice following Royal College Guidance and that of National and International Pain Societies.
· Represent the pain service at Division and Trust meetings where relevant/appropriate.
· Deal with highly complex patients and situations which require detailed analysis and assessment.
· Provide evidence-based advice, support and guidance to Trust staff in the management of patients in pain, in accordance with the local pain service policies.
- Demonstrates time management and organisational skills to deliver a flexible service that responds appropriately to unpredictable and challenging needs.

Essential criteria
- Registered General Nurse (Adult).
- Evidence of Continued Professional Development
- ENB 998 or equivalent teaching/mentorship qualification (inc. experience).
- Relevant MSc (in pain management or associated subject)
Desirable criteria
- Independent non-medical prescriber.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Extensive experience post RN registration
- Extensive clinical experience working as a band 7 in a pain management team (acute and chronic)
- Knowledge/evidence of change management
- Evidence of service planning and development
- Evidence of audit and data collection/analysis
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of research and/or participated in projects
- Experience of undertaking Nurse-led Clinics
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge and experience of pain management principles (inc. anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and chronic disease management).
- Patient Controlled Analgesia. Regional Anaesthesia/Epidural Analgesia.
- Knowledge and experience in delivering teaching and public presentation skills (formal and informal basis).
- Experience in preparing and presenting information at meetings.
