Job overview
The Admissions & Pre-Assessment team in Sutton , are looking for a highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills to complete our team. The team consists of Nurses, anaesthetist, health care assistants, administrators, technician (CPET and ECHO), research nurses and anaemia service CNS.
We provide a nurse led clinic supported by our anaesthetic consultants for patients undergoing surgery for a range of procedures, and specialties. We also support the elective admission pathway in the hospital and work closely with the Clinical site practitioners. We also work collaboratively with the Endoscopy, interventional radiology, private care and day surgery teams.
Our aim is to provide safe effective pre-operative care and we are responsible for ensuring a safe patient assessment in line with Royal Marsden and National guidelines and deliver a high standard of care with a patient centred approach.
Recently this team has supported the pre-operative pathway for oncology patients across London to continue to deliver as much cancer treatment as possible, with the initial focus being surgery.
We are looking for someone with a positive and progressive attitude, ability to problem solve, competent in advanced assessment skill and works well in a multi-disciplinary team.
Main duties of the job
- To coordinate and supervise a shift, communicating effectively with members of a multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality, evidence-led care to patients.
- To exercise clinical judgment and decision making about patient needs in terms of long term goals or plans.
- To participate fully in the day to day organization and running of clinical trials including the recruitment, education and monitoring of patients entering a clinical trial and liaison as required with trial sponsors.
- To assume personal accountability for nursing care delivered to a patient in accordance with the NMC code of conduct. There is an expectation for post holders:
1.To promote a safe clinical environment for all patients, visitors and staff
2.To participate in Trust initiatives around infection control and care quality indicators
3.To assist with any local or trust initiatives to ensure the continuous improvement of the quality of services and safeguarding of high standards of care

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

- To complete the first level assessment of patients with cancer and their families to gain an understanding of their physiological, psycho-social, spiritual and cultural needs and to develop a positive, realistic and supportive attitude to ensure that these needs are met. This will include:
- Counterchecking patients’ vital signs, blood results, patient body surface area, chemotherapy prescription and consent before administration of treatment.
- Educating patients on their treatment such as indications and side effects.
- Ensuring necessary medication and follow up appointments are obtained.
- To plan, document, deliver and evaluate care plans from admission through to discharge / transfer discussing this with the patient, their family and multi-disciplinary teams and to alert the Sister/Charge Nurse of any changes. To set goals for each of the identified nursing issues and encourage / teach other nursing staff to do the same. To help the patient achieve set goals through care planning.
- As a specialist cancer nurse, to assess the educational and informational needs of the patient and family. This includes producing and using appropriate materials to ensure optimum understanding of nursing care and the likely outcome.
- To provide skilled care and expertise in venepuncture and/or cannulation. To assess patients for a suitable central venous access device. To provide education to patients on the care and management of central venous access devices and to adopt a problem solving approach to managing complications with all vascular access devices.

Essential criteria
- Unrestricted NMC Registration to practice
- Post graduate level at the relevant speciality/ continuing professional education
Desirable criteria
- Relevant degree or working towards master’s level
- Clinical supervision training / experience Mentorship/Teaching Qualification

Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience in the care of surgical and / or endoscopy patients.
Desirable criteria
- Pre-assessment experience for both general anaesthetic and sedation
- Experience in managing nurse-led clinics
- Experience in facilitation, teaching, assessing, and coaching of team members/students
Skills
Essential criteria
- Competent in venepuncture and cannulation
- Excellent and compassionate communication ability
- Motivated and enthusiastic individual; possessing a “can do” attitude
- Ability to work as part of a team and in collaboration with others using effective verbal, written and interpersonal skills.

Desirable criteria
- RMH Certificate in venepuncture and cannulation to be obtained within three months of appointment
- Typing speed between 25-30 words per minute
