Job overview

Bud Flanagan Ambulatory Inpatients (AMBIN) is a highly specialised haemato-oncology transplant day unit delivering inpatient-level treatments within an outpatient setting. We care for patients undergoing supportive therapies, systemic anti-cancer treatments, and cellular therapy administration.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Band 7 Ward Manager to join our friendly and dedicated team.
This is an exciting opportunity for a nurse who demonstrates strong leadership skills and has experience in managing a team, this nurse will be passionate about delivering exceptional haemato-oncology care. You will:
•    Provide clinical leadership and support within your team
•    Proactive at managing the unit staff, environment and resources.
•    Deliver high-quality, patient-centred care to complex haematology-oncology patients
•    Work proactively within a fast-paced, highly specialised environment
•    Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the wider multidisciplinary team

Main duties of the job

Working alongside a highly skilled and motivated multidisciplinary team, including nurses, doctors, Allied Health Professionals (AHPs), and education teams, you will: 

  • Create and maintain a safe, therapeutic clinical environment for all patients and their families who come to the ward.
  • Co-ordinate all functions and activities proactively within the ward, working closely with Matron and other Sisters.
  • Manage resources of clinical area within budgetary limitations e.g. Finance, equipment and staff (including temporary staff)
  • Provide strong clinical leadership to the nursing and health care support workers that is motivating, supportive and sets clear boundaries resulting in a high quality safe patient care.
  • Work closely with School of Nursing and Practice Educators team to support a clinical learning environment that enables nursing staff to develop professionally and promotes the use of evidence in practice.

  • Manage a co-ordinated nursing service in liaison with all members of the multi-disciplinary team maximising high quality patient care.
  • To maintain clinical credibility through practice and to utilise the findings of nursing research and evidence based care to optimise high quality patient care.
  • To monitor and review nursing practice regularly, participating in audits and data gathering using trust information systems in accordance with Trust policy and NMC Guidelines.
  • To maintain the continuity of quality nursing care that responds flexibly to patients’ and carers’ needs and includes a safe discharge to the community or relevant care setting.
  • Monitoring of trends and prevalence’s of clinical incidents according to the Trust’s Clinical Governance Guidance and Directives and develop strategies to prevent them reoccurring.
  • Encourage nursing staff through role modelling to apply critical thinking through the process of clinical assessment of patients or problem solving. To then follow this process through the planning and evaluation stages of patient care and to effectively document this process in the nursing records.  

Person specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registration
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Recognised teaching qualification
  • First Level management qualification and/or experience in clinical management.
  • Relevant experience post registration
  • Qualification in oncology or speciality Diploma or Degree level study (or equivalent)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of Intravenous Drug Administration & Blood Products
  • Experience of Venepuncture/Cannulation or Willingness to develop these skills on appointment
  • Sufficient experience to be able to undertake Ward Manager role
  • Experience in chemotherapy administration
  • Experience in Ambulatory devices
  • Experience in Stem cell transplantation and care of this patient group
  • Experience in Cellular therapy administration and care of cellular therapy patient group
  • Knowledge and understanding of clinical trials management

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of a good understanding of NHS (or equivalent) reforms including those affecting cancer and relevant services
  • Budget monitoring/management experience.
  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Word, Outlook etc.)
  • Evidence of effective interpersonal skills with particular ability to liaise with multidisciplinary team members
  • Ability to make decisions, organise and prioritise
  • Evidence of effective negotiating and influencing skills
  • Ability to lead a team
  • Ability to motivate others

Other

Essential criteria
  • Flexibility to meet the needs of the service (e.g. shift work)
  • Able to participate in hospital cover on a rotation basis in ‘out of hours’ periods
