Interventional Radiology Nurse (Band 6 x 3) - Sutton site
Part-time @17 hours/week
Following the expansion of our Interventional Radiology (IR) service, we are excited to build our pioneer IR nursing workforce at the new Royal Marsden IR Unit in Sutton.
As we establish this new service, we are accepting applications from nurses who are currently working independently in IR or from other clinical areas such endoscopy, cath lab, theatres, or ICU where you can evidence transferrable skills that are essential to the role.
Successful applicants will be expected to rotate through the different clinical areas within IR and demonstrate the required clinical skills, including:
• Assisting or scrubbing in the procedure room
• Providing nurse led conscious sedation
• Caring for patients in Stage 1 recovery
Shifts are allocated according to service needs every Tuesday and Thursday:
• Procedure Room / Sedation RN: 08:00–17:00 or 08:30–17:30
• Recovery RN: 09:00–18:00 or 09:30–18:30

Main duties of the job

  • The post-holder will have responsibility for the clinical nursing care of patients attending the Diagnostic Imaging Department. This includes rotating within all disciplines of interventional radiology nursing as outlined in this job description. 
  •  The post-holder will assess the needs of patients and evaluate appropriate care within the department ensuring that procedures are carried out within Trust policies and procedures. The post-holder will meet the requirements of the NMC’s Code of Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice, with particular reference to personal accountability for nursing duties undertaken.
  • The post-holder will work with other members of the internal and external multidisciplinary team, to ensure the delivery of a safe, efficient and effective service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Support and inform family members and carers who often accompany patients for both elective and emergency procedures
  • Liaise with referring doctors and ward staff to ensure pre-procedural work is completed
  • Prepare equipment for the safe care of the patient during procedure
  • Communicate with other members of the interventional radiology team regarding the patient
  • Identify and act upon potential hazards to both patient and staff and where appropriate act to prevent injury
  • Identify potential of various drugs used during the procedure including contrast
  • Be able to talk about patients’ consents for procedures in line with local policy
  • Ensure patient’s identification

Person specification

Education/Qualification/Other Requirements

Essential criteria
  • NMC registered nurse with no practice restrictions
  • Current or recent IR/endoscopy/Cath lab/theatres/ICU experience
  • Competent in intravenous medication administration
  • Travel to Chelsea to complete competency assessments and maintaining IR competencies
  • Able to wear lead gowns as required
  • Able to stand continuously for long periods of time (e.g. 45-60 mins at a time)
  • Safely organise / lead / co-ordinate a procedure list
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in scrubbing, assisting during procedures, providing nurse-led conscious sedation and stage 1 recovery post sedation
  • Experience in running nurse led pre-assessment clinics
  • Completed the nurse-led sedation competencies
  • Experience in deputising for the unit manager
