Specialist Midwife in Maternal Medicine

Band 7

Job overview

Specialist Midwife in Maternal Medicine – Midwifery Band 7 - Permanent

St George’s Hospital maternity unit provides care to over 5000 women. The unit is a tertiary centre with multiple services that provide a range of exceptional professional development activities. The midwives are proud to promote holistic, woman-centred care to the diverse local community and women and families transferred to St Georges Hospital for care.

Our enthusiastic midwifery, obstetric and anaesthetic teams work collaboratively to meet the specific needs of women who come from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. The team strive to normalise the pregnancy and birth experience for women with both normal and complicated pregnancies, excelling in the provision of midwifery care for women who require more intensive support. The unit has an increasing home-birth rate and women have the option of birthing their babies in our midwife- led birth centre. St Georges Hospital Caesarean section rate continues to be one of the lowest amongst the London teaching hospitals.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, dynamic and motivated midwife who has a passion for caring for women with complex medical conditions to join our Maternal Medicine team. The successful applicant will work in partnership with the midwives in the Maternal Medicine team as well as the multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking a motivated individual with excellent interpersonal skills who is passionate about working within an evolving team that delivers excellent care for our complex women.

As the potential post holder you will provide direct clinical care for women with complex medical conditions in conjunction with the Maternal Medicine consultants, Diabetes specialist Midwives and wider Specialist teams. You will work closely with women to plan and coordinate their care based on individual needs.  You must be able to demonstrate evidence of experience working in Maternal Medicine and have undertaken relevant training. You must be able to demonstrate evidence of clinical leadership, be resourceful and have an ability to work autonomously in a highly demanding environment.

This post is a permanent contract and is full-time. However part-time and job shares/alternative hours may be considered upon request. In addition to our well-established orientation programme, there are many opportunities for in-service training, development of special interests, and excellent career prospects.

Working for our organisation

St George’s, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group cares for a population of four million people in South West London and North East Surrey. Our sites include St George’s Hospital, one of 11 major trauma centres in the UK and the largest healthcare provider and major teaching hospital in the area; St Helier Hospital, home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary's Hospital for Children; and Epsom Hospital, home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC).

After years of collaboration, our two Trusts became a hospitals group in 2021. While remaining as two separate Trusts, being a hospitals group will help us to collaborate more closely on research, and the development, education, and training of our 17,000-strong workforce.
