Tameside Hospital is seeking an experienced, motivated, and compassionate Band 6 Paediatric Staff Nurse to join our dedicated Children’s Unit. This is an exciting opportunity for a confident and skilled paediatric clinician to take on a key leadership role within a friendly, supportive, and forward‑thinking team.
Our Children’s Unit provides high‑quality inpatient, day‑case, and assessment care for infants, children, and young people with a diverse range of medical, surgical, and complex health needs. As a Band 6 nurse, you will play an essential part in ensuring safe, effective care delivery, supporting junior colleagues, coordinating the shift, and acting as a positive role model for excellent paediatric practice.
You will bring strong clinical expertise, sound decision‑making, and a commitment to family‑centred care. You will work closely with the multidisciplinary team to support seamless care pathways, safeguard vulnerable children, and promote the Trust’s core values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence.

Main duties of the job
As a Band 6 Paediatric Staff Nurse on the Children’s Unit, you will provide senior clinical leadership and coordinate safe, effective care for infants, children, and young people with a wide range of medical and surgical conditions. You will act as the Nurse in Charge of the shift when required, ensuring safe staffing, appropriate skill mix, and smooth patient flow throughout the unit. You will assess, plan, implement and evaluate high‑quality, evidence‑based nursing care while maintaining a strong focus on family‑centred practice and safeguarding responsibilities.
You will support, supervise and mentor Band 5 nurses, support workers and student nurses, promoting a positive learning environment and ensuring all staff work in accordance with Trust policies, NMC standards and paediatric best practice. You will communicate effectively with children, families and the multidisciplinary team, acting as a key point of escalation for deteriorating patients and ensuring timely clinical decision‑making.
Your role will include contributing to clinical governance, quality improvement, infection prevention and risk management initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and service standards. Essential criteria
- Registered Children’s Nurse (RN Child / RSCN) with current NMC registration
- Evidence of post‑registration paediatric study at diploma level or above
- Paediatric Immediate Life Support (PILS) qualification
- Practice Assessor / Practice Supervisor qualification
Desirable criteria
- Degree in Nursing or working towards
- Leadership or first‑line management qualification
- Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS / EPLS)
Experience
Essential criteria
- Minimum 4 years’ post‑registration experience in acute paediatrics
- Experience coordinating clinical shifts and leading a team
- Experience supervising junior staff and students
- Demonstrated participation in clinical audit and practice development
- Experience recognising and escalating the deteriorating child
- Evidence of safeguarding experience within paediatrics
Desirable criteria
- Experience deputising for a Ward Manager
- Participation in service improvement or quality improvement projects
- Experience in complaint handling or involvement in incident investigations
- Experience working across multiple paediatric settings (e.g., Assessment, HDU, Ambulatory, ED)
Skills and knowledge
Essential criteria
- Advanced paediatric assessment and clinical decision‑making skills
- Ability to prioritise care, manage patient flow, and allocate workload safely
- High level of competence in paediatric clinical skills (IV therapy, drug admin, observations, PGDs)
- Clear understanding of NMC Code, clinical governance, risk management & safeguarding procedures
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to deliver teaching, coaching, and supervise learners
- Competent with electronic patient record systems
- Ability to remain calm, effective, and supportive under pressure

- Knowledge of national paediatric standards (NICE, RCPCH)
