Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care and has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients’ homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Sunflower House building newly relocated, and opened on the hospital site.

We currently have more than 4,000 staff working across our community and hospital sites. We’re also a teaching and training hospital providing education and training to around 540 medical and over 500 nursing and allied health professional students each year.

Are you passionate about neonatal education and looking to develop your education/development skills in a broader context?

Then come and join like-minded people in the North West Neonatal Operational Delivery Network (NWNODN). Established in April 2013 it compromises of the 3 mature Neonatal Networks; Lancashire and South Cumbria, Greater Manchester and Cheshire and Merseyside.  

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic neonatal nurse with a extensive neonatal experience, Qualification in Speciality (QiS), mentorship experience and a background in education to join our dynamic Education Team.

As part of NWNODN Education Team you will support the delivery of the Foundation in Neonates Programme (FiN), Foundation Element of NW Pathway to Qualification in Speciality, alongside supporting the delivery of multi-disciplinary education across the North West Neonatal ODN

Main duties of the job

  • Be responsible for planning and delivering formal classroom and online teaching sessions and learning resources based on current evidence base   

  • Be responsible for the maintenance of an appropriate learning environment, allowing all learners to optimise their professional development  

  • Function as a senior clinical practitioner within the neonatal unit demonstrating advanced knowledge and clinical skills 

  • Promote the objectives of the NWNODN  

  • Be a highly motivated individual, demonstrating a flexible approach to meet the competing demands of the role 

  • Be required to travel to all units in the NWNODN to promote education and training 

  • Practice in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct in order that a safe and quality service is provided. 

  • Act as a role model in the clinical area teaching, assessing and supporting neonatal teams. 

  • Be responsible for the delivery of clinical expertise in all aspects of the clinical setting. 

  • Act as a resource of specialised knowledge and clinical expertise to ensure care delivered to the neonate and family is appropriate and optimum. 

  • Encourage and promote an evidence-based culture. 

  • Act as an advocate for babies and their families supporting the principle of Family Integrated Care.

Communication 

  • Develop and maintain effective communication with staff undertaking education programmes which shows a sensitivity to their individual circumstances. 

  • Articulate and interpret information for staff ensuring understanding. 

  • Demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams across NWNODN dealing with complex situations and working towards a resolution. 

  • Create an environment that encourages and maintains effective communication systems between the Trusts and the NWNODN. 

 

Analytical Skills 

  • Ensure appropriate systems are in place to maintain accurate records. 

  • Assist in the development and evaluation of teaching programmes.   

  • Demonstrate an awareness of cost implications associated with the programmes and ensure effective use of all resources.  

  • Demonstrate an overall awareness of quality issues and a commitment to continuous quality improvement. 

  • In collaboration with NWNODN Team and hospital-based manger and educators deal appropriately with capability or professional issues. 

Planning and Organising Skills 

  • Utilise specialist neonatal knowledge and experience in the development and delivery of education across the north-west. 

  • Work within the neonatal service Providers to support the planning and delivery Education across NW. 

  • Organise room booking/virtual delivery tools for learning as appropriate. 

Physical Skills 

  • Standard keyboard skills 

  • A high proportion of time will be office-based, using computer equipment. 

  • There will be a requirement to work to tight timescales and competing deadlines

Education and Training

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse/Midwife
  • Neonatal Qualification in Speciality
  • Mentorship qualification or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • A recognised teaching qualification or equivalent level of experience

Experience

  • Current evidence of mentoring within the clinical environment
  • Experience of multidisciplinary neonatal education and training

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Extensive knowledge of specialist areas, acquired through post graduate nurse education or equivalent experience or training plus further specialist knowledge or experience to master’s level equivalent
