Job overview
An opportunity has arisen within the Gastroenterology Care Group on the Aintree site for a band 6 IBD Specialist Nurse in Gastroenterology, maternity cover, working as part of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) team.
The Aintree IBD service is a specialist and tertiary referral centre, providing care for patients with IBD in the North of Liverpool and beyond.
The team consists of 4 Gastroenterology Consultants, 4 IBD CNS, senior Dietician, senior Pharmacist, and Clinical Psychologists. The team works closely with the Colorectal Team, Stoma nurses, Nutrition Team and Endoscopy.
The post holder will be an integral member of the established IBD team on the Aintree Site working alongside the existing IBD Lead nurse and their team to enhance the service currently offered.
This post would be suitable for a Registered nurse with substantial post registration experience and with demonstrable experience of working within gastroenterology.
Main duties of the job
The Clinical Nurse Specialist will act as the clinical expert and professional resource to the multi-Professional team, patients and carers within their Speciality Service.
Deliver specialist nursing care through patient clinics, inpatient reviews, and a dedicated IBD telephone helpline.
Work closely with the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to assess, plan, and evaluate care for patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
Act as a patient advocate, ensuring care is personalised and evidence-based.
Participate in MDT meetings and contribute to service planning and quality improvement initiatives.
Support audits, data collection, and research to enhance clinical outcomes.
Assist in developing and delivering education programmes for patients, carers, and staff.
Engage in professional development and maintain up-to-date knowledge of IBD management.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder will:
- Lead nurse-led clinics
- Support fast-track pathways for suspected IBD referrals.
- Help implement and manage Patient Initiated Follow-Up (PIFU) systems.
- Assist with screening, education, and monitoring of patients on biologics and immunosuppressants.
- Support inpatient reviews, and work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team to coordinate ongoing care and discharge planning.
- You will play a key role in patient education, empowering individuals and their families to self-manage their condition, while recognising and responding to changes in clinical status.
- The role also involves contributing to service development, supporting innovative models of care, and promoting professional growth within the nursing team, including areas such as nurse prescribing.
- Working closely with the Lead IBD Nurse, Matron, and clinical leadership, you will help ensure the delivery of safe, effective, and compassionate care.
