Nurse Practitioner in Early Pregnancy

You will demonstrate safe, clinical decision-making and expert care for patients within the field of pregnancy management choice . You will work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team to meet the needs of patients, supporting the delivery of policy and procedures, and providing nurse leadership as required.
Supporting the Department Manager and Deputy Manager in leading and supervising a safe, high standard of nursing practice and the delivery of evidenced based patient care in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
Code and the Trust’s Strategy for Nursing and Trust Policies and Procedures whilst adhering to the government guidelines for Abortion care
The post holder will ensure that patients receive necessary care and treatment to enable them to progress along agreed pathways of care, working towards and within NHS quality and access targets. This will be achieved through the application of specialist knowledge skills and practice.

This role has an academic as well as practical competencies that need to be achieved within in a 2 year timescale
Application of specialist skills and knowledge in adherence to agreed pathways which will involve:
• Deliver nurse led assessment service and instigating the necessary investigations and act appropriately on results within agreed guidelines
• Ultrasound qualification desirable; however candidates must be willing to work towards a scanning competency wihtin 2 years
• To identify and monitor care priorities and organise workload ensuring time to treatment parameters are met and any delays are escalated to the department manager .
• Deliver high quality, expert and evidence-based nursing care to all patients and their families attending the department.
• To take consent from patients for planned surgical procedures and medical procedures

• Function at experienced nurse level, able to make effective decisions autonomously / independently without supervision and in partnership with patients, families and the multi-disciplinary team
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of termination options , legal requirements and patients’ comprehension of the procedures available
• Assist with the clinical management of the department, maintaining high standards of nursing practice and promoting the philosophy of patient and family centered care. Ensuring effective communication is always maintained.
• Act as a role model for the nursing team, ensuring the delivery of a high standard of evidence-based care to patients and providing support for all staff
• Support the department manager in undertaking personal development reviews, risk assessments and management of the risks identified
• Promote a culture of incident reporting , management clinical incidents, validation reports i.e., Sepsis, department audits, data collection for nursing data and input it into trust systems .
• To issue/prescribe medication within agreed Trust policy and Department of Health guidelines utilising Independent Nurse prescribing qualification and any agreed patient group directives.
• To be competent and abide by statutory rules and regulations concerning the safe custody and administration of drugs to all patients.
• To be competent in the use of all equipment and technology in the area and participate in ensuring that it is always serviced and kept in good order. Safely demonstrate the ability to set up, maintain and train staff in the use of all medical devices used on the area in accordance with NMC guidelines, Division and Trust policy.
• Manage challenging and difficult situations with a professional and emotionally appropriate response, ensuring the needs of the patient remain paramount.
• Actively work with the Department Manager to be involved in and contribute to the development and delivery of nurse led services within the Bedford Centre and identify areas of practice where their roles may be extended to enhance the service provided for patients and their families.
• To be actively involved in referring to other agencies and specialties – Specialist placements Social Services, Safeguarding Team, etc.
• Be able to give and manage the breaking of bad / distressing news and ensure the patients and family are treated with sensitivity and responsive of their needs.
• Be aware of the psychological, social and emotional needs of patients and their families in relation to hospital attendances , the reason for their attendance and effectively minimise the stress caused by their situation
• The post holder may be required to work within any of the Divisional areas or in other settings to support the patient’s care as required.
