Job overview

We are seeking a compassionate, motivated, and reliable Healthcare Support Worker to join our dynamic team in the Main Theatres at Ormskirk Hospital, part of the Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

Main duties of the job

As a vital member of our theatre team, you’ll provide both direct and indirect care under the supervision of qualified staff. From preparing theatres and assisting with procedures to supporting patients through their surgical journey, your role will be essential in ensuring a safe, clean, and compassionate environment.

Acute Care

Providing emergency and maternity services at Whiston, Southport and Ormskirk hospitals, and medical and surgical specialties across all our sites.

Providing primary care services at Marshalls Cross Medical Centre situated in St Helens Hospital.

Community Services

Providing adult community services for St Helens and a wheelchair service in Chorley, South Ribble, and West Lancashire. Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.

Specialist Regional Services

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation of theatre environments, ensuring all equipment and instruments are clean, sterile, and ready for use.
  • Support patients before, during, and after surgery, providing reassurance and compassionate care.
  • Undertake clinical observations and basic diagnostic tests , blood pressure, temperature, pulse
  • Assist with patient positioning and transfers, using appropriate manual handling techniques and equipment.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and contribute to patient records.
  • Ensure infection prevention and control standards are upheld at all times.
  • Work collaboratively with the wider team to ensure smooth running of theatre lists and patient flow.
  • Participate in emergency response situations as required.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, staff, and departments.
  • Uphold patient dignity, comfort, and confidentiality at all times.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 2 or above in Healthcare or equivalent demonstrable experience within a Theatre setting
  • GCSE Level or equivalent in English and Maths

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of personal care.
  • Previous experience of working in a care assistant role.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Theatre Care Assistant role and responsibilities
  • Experience working in a Healthcare setting
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working within a Surgical/Theatre Department

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and written.
  • Good numeracy and literacy skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Able to accept direction and guidance in the role.
  • Aware of own limitations.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • Basic IT skills
  • Ability to work independently or within a multi-disciplinary team

Essential criteria
  • Physically able to perform the full range of TCA duties.
  • Dexterity and accuracy in undertaking clinical skills, use of equipment and documentation. Moving and Handling of patients.
  • The post requires frequent effort which involves delivering personal care to patients. Working pattern maybe unpredictable.
  • Staff may be involved in emotionally challenging situations.
  • Shift rotation, Cross site working, On call commitments, Flexible and adaptable. The post requires frequent exposure to unpleasant conditions, bodily fluids, smells etc.
