Job overview

This post is an exciting opportunity to help expand, strengthen and develop the current nutrition service. The post holder will take on the role of Nutrition Specialist Nurse at St Helens and Whiston sites of Mersey West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He/she will be working as part of the Nutrition Support Team alongside another Nutrition Specialist Nurse and provide specialist care and support for patients receiving artificial nutrition support. The post holder will assist in the delivery of nutritional services throughout the Trust, working within the multidisciplinary team supporting medical, nursing and other clinical colleagues to ensure the quality of nutritional care to patients is maximised.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking a registered nurse who is enthusiastic, self-motivated and a great team player with a drive and commitment to this specialised area. The post will further improve multi-professional work by being involved in staff education and disseminating national and local nutritional practice guidelines and policies.

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse Diploma/Degree
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Current ALS/ILS certification
Desirable criteria
  • Post-registration qualification in specialist area
  • Teaching and assessing qualification
  • Clinical Examination Skills Course
  • Independent Nurse Prescriber

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post registration experience in an area exposed to Nutrition patients
  • Significant experience as Band 6 or above
  • Experience of teaching and assessing students/staff in the clinical area
Desirable criteria
  • Proven track record in service development and implementation of change
  • Demonstrate evidence of effective leadership qualities

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to analyse data and provide written reports.
  • Intermediate IT skills in word processing and spread sheets
  • Knowledge of professional and NHS issues, and policy relating to specialist areas
  • Able to manage work autonomously
  • Proven organisational and communication skills
  • Ability to communicate unpleasant/sensitive information to patients in a variety of settings
  • Able to participate/undertake clinical audit and research
